okay so heres the deal - about two years ago i had vinyl boss 302 style sidestripes (from BSM) put on my TR mustang. a year later, in 08, i rear ended someone and wound up getting a new hood and having the front bumper repainted. the fenders were blended with clearcoat over the stripes. Im contemplating changing my stripes, and Im wondering what would be involved in removing the fender pieces of the stripe - would I need to have the fenders re-cleared? would they only need to be wet-sanded to eliminate the outline of the stripe? bear in mind that the stripes were applied over the pre-existing clearcoat. Also, about how much should a job like this run me? Im thinking of getting a GT bumper next year and might get this done at the same time. . .

The body shop will ave to remove the stickers, D.A. the area down until feathered out, prime the area and block sand it. Once block sanded they will prime again and blocksand the final time. After this, they will have to scotch brite your entire door. When they paint they will have to blend onto the door and paint the area that was repaired on the fender. There is also a good chance they will have to scuff the hood and blend onto it and reclear as well. Clearing over decals is a big no-no:nono:

are you positive they actually cleared over the vinyl? If so, as cagle said, removing them will be a total dog. I know we would never clear over vinyl at my place (or any place i know of)

its a really hack way to do things.

the right way would be to remove the vinyl, sand down the whole fender, reclear, then after a few days of the paint setting reapplying the vinyl.

the problem with clearing over the vinyl is because of what you are doing. if they originally took the vinyl off and reapplyed it after it was painted, then you wouldn't have to worry about it.

but now when you do get the vinyl off, which will be a beeyatch to remove, your going to have a nice hardline where the vinyl used to be. so it'll have to be sanded down, like j cagle said, its gunna have to be primed again. because if they just sanded it down and cleared over it again, it'll look like a crease in the panel.

Plus clear coat will eventually flake/peel off the vinyl. Only shade tree body shops clear over decals and pinstripes around here anyways.
