Crap Flaps

Anyone who has run their S197 at the drag strip knows about the "Crap" that attaches itself to your rear quarter panels from burn-outs or simply spinning a bit during launch. Some of the guys use a crap load of painters tape to protect their ride which I am sure works but goes through a lot of blue tape and looks like crap if you have pictures or videos taken. Some guys install Ford or aftermarket mud flaps when they change out their tires which works fine but they are somewaht limited in size for cosmetic reasons and lets some of the crap get by. And you have to completely remove the three screws and get them restarted each time.

I made an alternative today, they attach like mud flaps, but they are much wider, only require you to loosen the screws a few turns to get them mounted for simplicity, (of course you retighten the screws) and will catch more tire crap. These are easily cleaned and I painted the crap side black so the crap doesn't look so crappy on them.

Cool idea, i like how you made them to be removable. When i first looked at them i was thinking no way would i permanently attach those to the stang but to be able to take them off when not at the track is nice.

No I wouldn't want to drive around with those on there either, to and from the track maybe, but they are just for utility use. I could make them closer to the body but that kinda defeats the purpose or I guess
I could paint them Torch Red but why bother. I suppose if I had a Cobra I could cover them in some of that "Snake Skin" Tolex I put on my roller seat...LOL

Interesting ... Why not just put 3M Painters Tape on your car before the track? It looks better than that, IMO. Another easy way to prevent the rubber to sticking to the paint is to spray the sides of the bumper and any place where rubber flings with Pam cooking oil.

I answered that in my original post. That blue tape looks like crap on the car and if you are having pictures taken or a video it really looks bad. It takes longer to put that tape on the car than it does to put these on or remove them.

You are entitled to your opinioon as am I, to each his own.

There is a clear static cling film sold for this purpose. Don't remember where I saw it...maybe Jegs or Summitt.

looks pretty cool, i prefer the look of tape instead of those, but such a quick install/removal is definately a real nice advantage. permanent mudflaps are for pickup trucks.
The only thing i would say, i'd want the screws going through holes, not just a slot, i want no chance of those flying off at 110mph.

I agree that the tape not only takes a while to put on/take off, but looks horrible in pics/vids. Also spraying something on the sides to later have to clean off doesn't seem the best way. Since I have dedicated strip tires/wheels, I bought a set of black truck/SUV mudflaps and I just screw them into the wheel well while the tire/wheel is off. I don't think it adds more than a minute per side and they aren't that noticeable and keep the "crap" off my paint

I told you a few weeks ago I was going to make something so I looked around at what I had on hand for some kind of plastic/rubber kind of material and I didn't have anything suitable to go that wide so good 'ole 6061 aluminum it was LOL.

I did reshape the upper outside edge and made it a lot less squared off and a little nicer looking, but I wanted them wide and that's what I got. Of course I have until next Spring to rework them or make somethng else entirely as materials come available.

With those in place, I only get some rubber build up on the bottom of the muffler body.

I hear ya on being a long wait until spring! I plan on attending Get Out Of The Cold at MIR next year! That is usually held near the end of March.

I hope I have my MT radials and wheels by then, I am getting stoked for next year. I have a couple of other irons in the fire now too, I am getting the stuff together to install a "catch can" for the transmission and another one for the oil.

Hopefully I will get the "Anodizing" stared in a week or two. I am wondering what the valve covers are made of. Is it magnesiem or aluminum or an alloy of the two? They would look really cool anodized black or red on my car but I need to find out exactly what the metal actually is.

Thanks, I like to make stuff in my garage as a hobby kind of thing. I tinker with all kinds of things, some of which turn out pretty cool and of course some is laughable and now reside at the landfill.

Wesleys Bleech white is pretty power stuff, I would probably dalute it 25/75 is I was to spray on my paint..I don't even trust that stuff on my wheels, It messed up a few sets of wheels off previous cars. Rips clear coat.

Any problems with the screw holes stripping out? bleach white is nasty stuff
