Went to the track for the 1st time yesterday (only had the car for 1 month now).. ran about 7 times and the best time i could get was 12.44@112, 60 ft was 1.977. for the life of me i cannot figure out how to launch this car, i was on some M/T drags 275/40/17. and my best 60 foot time was 1.977 ( but most were 2.0 - 2.1). i tried launching from different rpms from 2500-4000, dumping the clutch, riding the clutch, all included a 2nd gear burn out. psi on tires were 12lbs - 14lbs. car is an 04 vert, intake, exhaust, off road x pipe, mgw shifter, sct xcal, BF 2.76 w/3 aux idlers, BF irs brace - dynoed at 461hp/467tq Tranny was very tempramental, sometimes very easy to shift other time very hard to get into gear??? is that normal??? I also iced the charger and TB and put ice into coolant resouivor. Any help and advise would greatly be appreciated. I havent raced in 3 yrs but i think i drive pretty well, got my 99 cobra 13.5s on streets w/minor bolt ons .. what kind of 1/4 mile times should i be expecting ??? i was hoping for 12.0s at least.
the tranny thing is normal. You need to 1. change the fluid to the GM syncromesh, 2. get yourself a MGW shifter, and 3. get the Fiore quadrant and micro click adjustor. Those times aren't bad for the first time at the track with the car in all honesty. These cars are super hard to launch if you aren't used to them. Keep at it and you'll find the sweet spot! edit, cancel #2, I see you already have it
You want better times? Dump the IRS and put a straight axle from a GT in. Your 60' times will drop like a rock. The IRS is just not designed for hard launches unless you want to throw a wad of money at it. U.M.
thanks to everyone who chimed in.... i was gonna do the tranny but i ran outta time to do it on fri.. i was gonna put gm or the royal purple stuff... what times should i be satisfied with the way it is right now...461hp/467tq on drag radials? i know i need to get my 60 down to 1.8 at least.
Exactly, IRS isnt meant for drag racing plan and simple. They designed it for handling. Dumping the clutch is gonna do you any good unless youve got alot of sticky tire anyways. If you want to make it a drag car throw a 9" under it and build some traction bars.
You are right in the average for your setup. With practice you can probably get down to around 12.0. I'd say that 12.0 to 12.8 is around the area your car will run in. Tranny sounds like it could use some help per other posts.
just learn it better. ive seen some awesome launches from guys at the track with nothing but DR's and a IRS brace out back. one guy hella feathers the clutch through first and it ****ing shoots out of the hole.
Quality full length subframes will do wonders for your car. What were the track conditions? With your power...I think you should be doing a little better than 112 traps.
