I am waiting on my SpeedCal to get in, then I am having it and 4.10 gears installed. I am a 3.73 guy, but decided to take the plunge and do something different on this Mustang...again...I used to be all gun-ho about the O/R X-Pipe, but for this car I got the H Pipe instead, now I have had 3.73 gears in 4 other Mustangs...but this time I am going to the 4.10s. My question is what will or should I do to feel the biggest difference? I would take it straight to the track in a warmer climate, however this is Kansas and Heartland Park is closed for the season...any ideas on to see the difference? I thought about going to a little stretch of road outside of town that people tend to race at and dropping the hammer before and then after. I don't race on the street, it would be in broad daylight and all the racing happens at night out there. I thought about taking it as fast as I could from one point to another and then doing just a 0-60 test in my head. I have no doubts I will feel and tell the difference, but in the past with the 3.73s I didn't feel much if anything at all, probably because I was expecting to much. Thanks guys
After going for my first run with 4.10s (coming from 2.73s), I had to go home and change my underwear. I recommend equipping a pair of Depends before your test drive. Also, if you are on stock-style tires (17x8s) don't count on getting traction. Even my slow NPI GT will bake the tires through the first 3 gears
Not sure what diff the SOP meter does between 3.73's and 4.10's. I know my jump form 3.23 was night and day.
4.10's will show at the track with a sticky tire. Like others have said, traction will be limited, so you will probably not notice any difference, except that the rear wheels will break much faster. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th will pull harder.
Twogts4us had a good observation about this a few years ago. He said that adding 3.73s felt like the car was 500 pounds lighter, and 4.10s made the car feel like it was 1000 pounds lighter.
4.10's FTMFW!!! I was going to get 3.73's instead and I am sooooo glad that I got the 4.10's instead. I would have been very disappointed in those after gettin the 4.10's installed. At the track...huge difference. I have to get more seat time with the gears, but it definitely a completely different animal in every aspect.
set up appointment for Monday morning to have the gears and speed cal installed! $275, not bad I don't think. Jared
Hey thanks! I remember that and it still rings true. Think of it this way... Stock gearing is, what, like 3.27? Subtract that from 3.73 = .46 Subtract 3.27 from 4.10 = .83 Does that put it into perspective? It's nearly double! I did 3.73s in my 02 GT and I regretted it from day 1...not much different from stock. My wife had 4.10s in her 01 GT - all I can say is WOW! Thanks again GettinThere - you just made my day!
At first, I wasnt sure it was worth the cost. Driving around town normally, it's hardly noticeable. Some give the impression you have to shift alot - yes, more than stock but not "alot". Highway takes a little getting used to at first, but now I much prefer the 4.10s over stock. MPG is down slightly, but you dont need to downshift to pass. I can drive up hills in 5th that I couldnt before. It just drives BETTER. IMO, its far easier on the car with the 4.10's. Shifting for fuel economy in the 3.27's just didnt work, but the 4.10's are just fine. The ONLY time I would prefer the 3.27s is highway cruising for MPG. Thats it. Performance wise is night and day. The shifts are spaced well. It pulls like a mostly stock car should. 1st gear traction is either there or it aint. Clutch it well, and it pulls out of the hole nice. 2-3-4 pull much better. And on a not-so-important note, burnouts are alot easier on a mostly stock car. Final thought...if I got a power adder, I'd probably change the gears. But for N/A, they are perfect.
I actually shift less with my 4.10's in town, because I can put it in 5th gear, and pull from 40mph on up to whatever I want, where before 5th gear was useless on anything but the highway, and I was constantly shifting between 3rd and 4th. Now I just put it in 4th, and if I slow down to 25mph, no big deal, I have the torque multiplication now to where I don't have to downshift.
I love everything about my 4.10s except how short 1st is. I use 2nd to start off from a stop unless I'm on an incline many days, but even this is not really a big gripe. I would not trade the 4.10s for any other gear!
got the gears put in but the SpeedCal is giving them trouble. Should pick up Tuesday at some point. Must say I am pretty excited.
picked up the car! they used a GPS system to test the accuracy of the SpeedCal and they said it was absolutely perfect from 0-80. I love the gears! very happy that I went with the 4.10s!
