when they are aimed right they are not so bad when they are behind you. it is the aftermarket that puts out cheap kits with lights that are the wrong color temp that blind the $hit out of you

I was told that there was some sort of problem with installing HID's into stock headlight housings, but now I can't remember what it was.

    OEM HID is legal.

ALL aftermarket drop in kit/retrofit/etc is ILLEGAL due to DOT regulation.

i guess its just another one of those state by state laws cuz i live in alabama and have never heard oh h.i.d.'s being illegal. and there are a lot of cars with aftermarket lights! i would say go to your police station/court house and ask them.

It takes a much different design of the reflector inside the headlight. HID Headlights are designed with this in mind, Standard Halogen fixtures are not. I dont think it so much that the lights themselves are Illegal, Its that using the standard fixtures there aiming and Way the light is dispersed is illegal.

Don't you also lose the highbeams when the stock lights are a combination low/high bulb like our Mustangs have?

Is this on cars with HID "kits"? Vehicles with HID as OE use either bi-xenon projectors or have a secondary halogen for high beam. This brightness you talk about is GLARE which is why people *think* they are brighter because there is no beam control. This is also one of the reasons why they are ILLEGAL according to DOT.

Do you guys even use your high beams? They are not just brighter, they point further down the road also. 100w-equivalent HID low beams aren't going to help you see 1/4mi down the road when they're pointed at the ground in front of the car. If you aim the light buckets upto compensate, that's not only illegal, it is also going to blind oncoming traffic(like police) and you can't dim them on demand.

    That's what I'm talking about . :nice:
