Hello everybody. I have an '01 GT convertible. When I first bought the car I had some magnaflow catbacks installed, everything else stock. It is still pretty quiet...it has a pretty nice sound between 2k and 2.5k RPM, but at idle it is not much different than stock. When I go cruising around I pull up to these other stangs or camaro's or transams, and it's almost embarrassing because they have that deep killer american muscle rumble (I live in the Detroit area too, so it seems everybody has their exhaust sounding amazing). I don't know much about cars, what gives it that awesome rumble and sound?

I have read other places that an X pipe or H pipe will beef up the sound. What do I need to make my car sound mean like these other cars? What do you guys recommend?

Oh, also does your transmission (auto or manual) effect your exhaust tone? I have an automatic.

Thanks so much for your input!

Since you have a Magnaflow catback already, I would suggest you get an offroad X pipe. The x pipe sounds better with those mufflers than an h pipe, IMO. The magnaflow mufflers are fairly quiet compared to some other brands of mufflers, but they do sound good.

As far as your transmission type affecting the tone, I would say that the air flow, engine load, and engine rpm will have the most effect on exhaust tone.

Yeah, a nice magnaflow O/R x-pipe would be nice.

I love the sound of my Steeda GT catback along with the BBK longtubes and off road x.... heres a vid of it :)

    And on the dyno....

I really dig the sound difference you get by adding the longtubes.. but kinda pricey IMO...
any off road x with stock exhaust manifolds seems too poppy and raspy for my liking...

It sounds pretty deep if you ask me... no match for a cammed out LSX GM motor though...
BTW I'm from the detroit area as well... SCS here!

Hey guys, thanks for your feedback! After looking up other people's vids I couldn't resist making one myself hehe. As it turns out, my exhaust actually sounds better than I thought it did...guess it is all where you are listening from. I set up my video camera a few feet behind the stang and fired it up! Here is a link, let me know what you guys think. This is all stock, just magnaflow catbacks.
