Please give me some advice. I have a 97 Cobra with an O/R X-pipe. I installed a set of Mac Pro-dumps on it today and it sounds terrible. Its okay when you are idling or normal driving through the gears, but when you accelerate hard, grear down , or let off, it sounds like the guts in the mufflers are loose. It makes the worst raspy, rattling sound that I have ever heard. Like the previous poster said, it sounds like a can of rocks. It is just un-driveable. Will exhaust pipes help this problem or am I wasting my time with this setup. I want something louder than stock without the rattling, paper tearing sound. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. What sounds best with an O/R X-pipe.

For Sale, Mac Pro-dumps, used one day. $135.00

What O/R X-pipe is on the car? I ran a BBK O/R X-pipe for two weeks with my 2 chamber flows that were dumped. The car sounded horrible, it resonated like crazy and made the worst rattling sound know to man.
I guarantee if you switched to an O/R H-pipe you would get a real deep and great sound. That way you can keep your brand new dumps, but like me you will have a worthless X-pipe sitting in your garage.

    Exhaust woes

Sounds too familiar. I also have a BBK O/R X-Pipe with the pro dumps. You are right, it has the worst rattling sound known to man. If I switch to an H-pipe, will it have that rattling sound when you let off the gas. Maybe I should get a Basanni or Magnaflow catback system for my x-pipe. I have listened to many sound files for the x-pipe and catbacks, its hard to get the sound that I want (kind of loud without that raspy, rattling sound). Oh yeah, these pro-dumps killed my bottom end torque.

If you go with the H-pipe you will have none of that rattling noise at all. My friend with a 98 Cobra now runs my old exhaust setup which consisted of a BBK O/R H-pipe and the 2 chamber flows dumped and he loves the sound. I have switched to a VRS O/R X-pipe and run a flowmaster american thunder catback and couldn't be happier.
You might be able to get decent sound from that BBK X-pipe if you do go with a non-chambered muffler like the dynomax, bassani, borla, or magnaflow.

That horrible sound you have is typical of off road pipes. If you swapped to a high flow pipe your sound would be perfect.
