I just bought my 2001 Cobra convertible . It's got right at 50,000 miles on it and
4th gear is grinding. The tranny guys are telling me that it needs a new 4th gear and synchro. My freinds say all I need is a aftermarket shift kit (Hurst) with hardened hardware to take care of it . my mechanic says it needs both . Has anyone here had any experience with this . I dont want to drop 9 bills on the tranny if I dont need to . And if allI need is a Kit does anyone know the right kit ?

Adding an aftermarket shifter will not "cure" mechanical transmission problems.

Avoid shortcuts and have the trans repaired properly. If it means taking it to a 2nd or 3rd trans shop for other opinions/quotes, do so. After the synchro problem has been taken care, feel free to then add your choice of shifter...because let's face it, the factory shifter feels like crap after you've rowed through the gears with an aftermarket shifter.

    Help!! revisited

Is there anyway that my shifter is actually causing 4th to grind? I.E Worn parts creating slack or improper tension.

Just to follow up on this , I took the transmission to a shop and it ended up needing a new 4th gear, synchros & input shaft. I installed a Roush ****er . It cost me a pretty penny but it was all worth it .The tranny guy said that the Tremec transmissions are indeed susceptible to this kind of thing. The main cause is speed shifting .
