1. May car is a 66 and has a late model 87-93 5.0 Ford Racing Crate motor. It's carburated and has the V-Belts.I mentioned before it is missing the Timing Pointer, so which one of these would I get?

#2 http://mustangsunlimited.reachlocal....1=C8AZ6023B+01
#3 http://mustangsunlimited.reachlocal....sp?T1=UP182+01

2. How do I / what's involved with replaceing the Transmission Vacuum Modulator on a C4 Automatic:

It's going to depend on what waterpump you have on. The 289 had the pointer on the drivers side which was part of the 66 cover. A late model had the pointer on the passenger side but if you used the 66 waterpump with the lower hose on the pass. side then it covers up the pointer and the timing marks on the late model balancer. Even if you got a pointer for the driver's side, the marks on the balancer will be off. I just went through this a few months ago and am running late model with v-belt. If you changed the radiator and WP to driver's side then you may be able to use a late model pointer. I had to remark my balancer, if you need a hand figuring it out let me know

88dragtop, your exactly right. I have a staggered radiator and the lower radiator hose is on the driver side. So will I be able to use the late model pointer or what other avenues do I have? Appreciate the help.

Joe

Joe,
Should be all set if you get a late model pointer then. If you get one of the slotted adjustable ones you're going to need to buy or make a piston stop to find TDC. I replied to your post on LMMC how to do this. It's a good idea to check anyway, at least you don't have to move the balancer marks like I did. I assume you have a std rotation WP because late model serpentines spin CCW. Saw your car at the Loctite show, looked good:nice:

I can't wait to get some real power in mine.

Mike

If you need a stock 5.0 timing pointer, I have several spares. These are stamped steel and bolt on with the two lower passenger side timing cover bolts. Tranmission modulator valve either screws on or is pushed in the rear of a C4, takes about 5 minutes to do one.

guys im really stuck. I have a passenger side outlet water pump, with an edelbrock timing cover.
The instructions are here:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL-4250&autoview=sku
Seems like they suggest pn F1TZ-6023-A. I cant track one down.

My problem is finding the timing pointers they suggest in the instructions. I assume I need the one that says 69 and later? (Is that when ford made the outlet on the passenger side?).

EDIT: I found F1TZ-6023-A at CJ's. My question is whether this is a timing pointer made to be bolted to the drivers side?

88 rag top, my situation is like the one you described in your first post. My outlet is on the passenger side, not letting me mount a pointer there. There is no pointer built in on the drivers side. My balancer does however, have markings for a drivers side pointer. I just need a pointer that will work/bolt up.

well thats the issue. the motor isn't really a pre-HO. its a 86 roller block, but externally, its a mix of old and new. The timing cover is made to work with the passenger side outlet water pump. My accessories are mounted like a stock 65. However, the timing pointer in a 65 was on the passenger side I believe? I need a timing pointer for the driver side, with a passenger side outlet waterpump.

Both 65 timing covers had cast in pointers on the driver's side of the cover at about the 1-2 o'clock position. If it's not there, it's a later date cover for a 70-up motor. One of the 65 covers will bolt up with a 70-up pump, the other won't

Let's assume that Ford mounted the the damper correctly. So, find TDC (take out #1 plug, and rotate motor by hand until piston is at TDC (use screwdriver in spark plug hole to feel when you get to TDC) and see where TDC on the damper points. This will tell you where the pointed needs to be mounted. It will be 10:00 o'clock (aka: "C-key), 11:00 o'clock (aka: B-key), or 2:00 o'clock (aka: A-key). Then get appropriate pointer. Also, you can call Ford Racing and ask which key (A, B, or C) that the crate motor uses.
