JLT or C&L?!?!

    man really startin to get a lil stressed out when it comes to looking for parts. :nonono: any comments or input on who has what and whats overall better :shrug: . i mean i cant even find a JLT intake for sale except at blow-by racing and even then their website is confusing. i guess their quality isnt as nice but hey if they post the same gains then whats the difference.

    o, and theres so many tunes out there, which ones best for the 05.

    sry but just sold the 02 for an 05 and trying to get back into things. :banana:

    K&N Cold Air Intake

    I just installed a K&N cold air intake and it is awesome. No tune needed and the car is much more responsive.

    Contact Jay at his shop site for info and pricing on the JLT. I just picked up the JLT and an SCT. Let me say that the difference between this and stock is incredible. I have an appointment at DTP Racing for a Dyno custom tune tomorrow.

    I would be surprised if the K&N kit did much good at all without a tune. EVen with a tune I wouldnt suggest it. Pick up a JLT.

    C & L. Decent price, looks great under-hood, ridiculously simple install, and OH MY GOD at the power increase. Bought it, installed it, still lovin' it. You will not be disappointed with it.

    Im still loving them.

    I've had 1 small exhaust pop due to the lack of restriction over having mufflers but that happened when shifting from 4th to 3rd with my auto.

    It didnt bug me though, it just happened.

    where did you get it? how much? you have a '05 GT right? how long has it been on? what, if you know does k&n say about a tune with there CAI, keep us updated, its possible your check engine just hasent come on yet

    BigWorm,

    I noticed that you have the same setup I am considering - C&L with Predator tune on an auto GT. With this setup and the canned Predator tune have you noticed an improvement with the auto's shifting? Do you know if the Predator tune turns off the torque control? I was thinking about going with Alternative Auto because of their rep with auto's but I would prefer to go with the Predator.

    Doug,

    The re-tune from the Predator does feel like it has changed the shift patterns. It revs higher before shifting and there is no "lag" like I felt before. Shifts are firmer and snappier. With the intake and tune, there is much more power available when you get into it. I highly recommend the C & L.

    K&N Question and Reply Response

    (1). I went to the K&N web site and followed links on the website to K&N dealers. There is a dealer in California that is right across the street (or close to it) from K&N. I bought the intake from them for $270 (I think). The intake comes with a heat shield and supporting brace that mounts to two front bolts of the driver side valve cover. The filter is plenty big (IMHO) and the width of the intake at the filter is just a little larger than the hydrocarbon trap.

    (2.) I now have about 100 miles on the car with a few WOT runs and no check engine light.

    (3.) Also, Cleveland you would not recommend the K&N. I would like to know why. Did you perform a side by side comparison on a dyno or test and tune day at the drag strip. You may doubt that the K&N does much without a tune but its on my car and not yours. So, I know and you don't. It runs much stronger and quicker than before. I am also getting better gas mileage.

    (4.) With more air to the engine the sound is better at WOT as well. I just ordered Borla axel back so next week end I will install those.

    Anyhow, I will let you guys know if it throws a check engine light. But right now I doubt that will happen. K&N is just the best - My opinon you don't have to agree. I can't wait til Diablo has a tune for the K&N. The I'll get a Predator.

    Agreed. I don't see how just by installed the K&N CAI that the car can be "much more responsive" when you're still dealing with a throttle that's like a sponge. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the K&N CAI is a quality piece, but there is NO WAY the car is going to respond to it as well as it would with a tune. A tune is the only way to tighten up the throttle on these cars, but once you do - wow is it a nght and day difference :nice:

    (1.)Before the K&N the car exhibited a very noticable lag when downshifting. Now, the lag is about 1/3 as before.

    (2.)I never said that my car with a K&N responded as well as a car with both a CAI and a tune. I only said that the car was more responsive.

    (3.) I think this experience suggests that the sluggish response is partly a throttle that is like sponge and partly the restrictive airbox. I don't see how anyone could argue that point.

    At the end of the day, I think this shows that a properly designed CAI does not require a tune to be effective. Don't get me wrong I plan on a Predator once there is enough experience and a tune for the K&N setup available

    Please don't twist this around, but if a CAI works on a 05 without a tune it's not doing much!
    I have done tons of testing and these cars do not add fuel when the new air is introduced. This means it will go lean with the added air.
    So, if kits don't need a tune all I can say is there not letting in much air. The K&N also makes you use the H/C trap, this is a restriction and will also reduce HP gains.
    K&N has a great name and people are loyal to them, but I don't see the need to buy a product for almost $300 that's not making much power.
    We have come to the day and age where tunes are needed for mods. This is our way of jetting carbs and changing point springs.

    Jeeze, the K&N website shows a dyno graph with a relatively modest hp incease (about 14) compared to the 25-30 hp increase from others with CAI and tune. So it is possible that the setup is more conservative than the others and just does not require a tune.

    Has anyone seen a A/F graph for the K&N???
    I would be very careful and have it checked on the Dyno. This new GT is not adding fuel like the past cars did when new air is introduced.
    MAC also sells a kit without a tune and I have seen a few with VERY lean A/F's. So lean they were forced to tune even though MAC says no need.
    Please understand, I'm not bashing K&N, but only trying to let you all know what's what.
    I have dyno tested many 05's and even the smallest amont of air will effect A/F.

    I have to say that the C&L Intake with thier tune on the Diablo Pred.
    Is worth the money and will put grin on your face :banana:
