im sure this has been discussed a million times on here but i would like first hand experience on parts used. i have a stock bottom block that runs very well with a few bolt on mods, bbk cold air, shorty headers, h pipe, mass air conversion, 130 amp 3g set up and electric contour fan, underdrives, you know just the typical stuff. i do not really want to get into replacing the cam because it runs well with the stock one(also i have never done it , and dont know anyone around here that does this work) what would a upper and lower intake gain me? any first hand experience on brands? also what aftermarket heads would help on the stock block? i dont really want used salvage yard parts. i would appriciate any help
What are your goals and what is your budget? From what I've read, the TFS intakes are great-as are their heads. Also, consider this-a stock 86 bottom end has flat top pistons with no reliefs-piston to valve clearance is at a premium...another reason to run TFS heads, since they require less valve relief. Very tough to beat for bang for buck on a stock bottom end. Long tube headers would probably help you out a little too. The stock cam will limit you though...I wish I could give you numbers, but you really need to take it to a dyno for that...people telling you what you "should" make is often misleading. I'm still in favor of TFS heads though.. Don't neglect your chassis and suspension either. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
my gt is a 87 so it should not have the flat top pistons? correct? i did do some things to the chassis, sub frames, and new shocks, struts, springs. workin on 13inch front brake upgrade. what if i just bolt on a supercharger to what i have? how will the thing react to that? best brand? boost? ease of install?
My bad-didn't see it anywhere, and thought your handle was what you were driving...87 has reliefs, yes-but TFS twisted wedge heads are still really good Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Looks like you've already done some stuff to increase braking ability and chassis rigidity- good. Mustangs and boost go together well, and if you were to throw on a set of heads and intake with a blower you'd have a very fun car to drive-even with a stock cam, but it would kinda limit you. The good part is that you likely wouldn't get into block splitting territory, unless you really turn up the wick on it. That being said, a vortech S trim would probably be right up your alley, they can be found used for not that much (unless you're opposed to that). It wouldn't overtax the engine, and you could still make good power with good tuning...I don't want to spin numbers though. Suffice it to say you'd have fun with it. You'd also have to upgrade your fuel system to support it-so don't skimp there. A 255 pump and 42lb injectors would keep you well fed and those parts can be had everywhere for good prices. Also would benefit from a bigger MAF for those injectors, then put it on the rollers! I guess I should ask though, is the bottom end in good enough shape to take it? Compression, leaks, etc... There's another thread on here right now where someone is making 343rwhp/411rwtq with stock head/cam and cobra intake, 73mm MAF, 30lb injectors and I think it said 70mm TB...still, stock idle and driveability with hellacious torque...might wanna look up that thread for details. with aftermarket exhaust, e-fan, underdrive pulleys, and new upper/lower intake you are looking at maybe 20hp and that is being extremely generous. the huge drawback here is the heads. I know this is so 10 years ago, but an explorer top end swap along with all the normal bolt ons is usually good for at least 250 to the wheels which is roughly 50hp over stock and will make it feel like a monster on the street. With some port work to the heads/intake you can likely put that in the 260-70 rwhp range. Match a decent cam or get a custom grind and you can likely put down just shy of 300rwhp. Short of the port work the top end parts can be had for under 400 dollars and I dont care what anyone here says they are great bang for the buck.
Well, yeah-that's the reason I mentioned it. You alluded to bolting on a blower, so I figured I'd refer to a like thread for expectations.
I put a Vortech SCi kit on my car and it made a big difference. 1800 bucks with the Stangnet discount from American Muscle.
