Hey Guys, Christmas day so the wife and I are riding about checking things out. We decide to go to the local Ford dealer to check prices. In a nutshell, V6's $25K, GT's $35K, GT500's, grab a arm rail...........$59.5 K!, $10K dealer **** you fee! A 465 hp Saleen on the lot was $60K, that I was kinda expecting. I don't feel so bad spending $8k for a 347, paint and uphosltery for the old '91!
    Merry Christmas!

Gearbanger, to each his own, it's a lot of money. Both my wife and I work for the largest defense contractor in the world with great wages and I wouldn't consider buying new for a minute. I was expecting the GT to be about $26K, not 35. I'll continue shopping for a 04 cobra or 05 Saleen in the mid ~20K range.

That’s fine and all, but you need to understand......ALL of the new cars built today are expensive, not just the Mustang. Mustangs aren’t $15k like they were in the 80’s and early 90’s, but they’re also not the glorified Ford Fairmont’s we knew them as back then either. With inflation and improvements in technology and design comes increase cost. As far as buying new goes, have you ever priced out a new Camaro, or Challenger by comparison? Hell, even most modestly equipped family sedans are approaching Mustang GT prices now a days? The Mustang is actually on the moderate end of the scale for a performance sedan if you want to split hairs.

Slipping into an '03-'04 Cobra, or an '05 Saleen are also great choices, which are certainly an option.....but in the end, you've still saddled yourself with a used car, with one or more previous owners, 3-4 years worth of wear and tear, rot, abuse, etc on it and zero factory warranty left. If you’re fine with that, then have at it, but most people who buy a new car are looking for just that and are willing to swallow the additional cost.

are you talking about brand new 2010 mustangs only or are you referring to '05 and up?? 35K for a GT sounds a little bit embellished honestly... I live on LI, New York, arguably one of the highest priced places to live in the United States, let alone the world, and '07, '08, and '09 mustangs are going for as low as 21k on dealer lots around here to make room for the 2010...

my grandfather just drove home an '08 vert for 26k out the door, i have a hard time believing things are that much more in FLA

The GT500 is really turining into a cliche high-roller exotic car these days, I'll give you that, but the price of the GT really suprised you? New model year GTs have been 30K+ for several years now. I don't think its terrible when you consider its performance and compare it to the competition. The Honda S2000, Nissan 350Z (now 370), Pontiac Solstice GXP, and the Dodge Challenger are all easily that expensive and more.

If you really want a S197, look into the used market. There are plenty of straight low mileage GTs that got sold off after gas prices went crazy. I wouldn't buy a brand new car unless I was ready to drop some coin, anyway.

    I second building a 347, though. :nice:

i agree, i say the same about its competition as well. i know i sound like a big pessimist all the time, but to be honest nothing i have really truely liked has come out from pretty much any company since 94-95ish. only a few come to mind that ide even bother owning, the C6 vettes, 03-06 WRX, 97/98 cobras, 03-04 cobras and machs, and last gen supra.

the only real reason i dont like the gt500 is because i cant stand shelby, from what ive read, shelby sounds like a real prick. charging people for autographs and suing people over name infractions etc. not to mention ford canned SVT to give shelby, saleen, rousch etc. the job of making special vehicles. look at what SVT had for us, 03/04 cobras, lightnings, focuses, contours, etc. a pretty cool list of vehicles no matter what you wanted, and you didnt pay an extra 10k for some old fart's last name on your trunk. i think this has done a part to ruin ford and put them where they are right now, at least from a performance enthusiast's perspective.

shelby's cars arent that cool, SVT could have done way better imo, and on top of that, i havent seen a single s197 done by saleen or rousch that even looked remotely tasteful. saleen's body kits are the ugliest things ive ever seen.

either way, i totally vote for the 347! :nice:

Yea, I'm not a big fan of the S197 myself, but you have to admit, it has a HUGE following, and it came on as soon as the 05s hit the showroom floor. SN95s never had anything like this. I think its done great things for Ford in a time when the American market is sucking.

I would pimp a 2010 GT at the drop of a dime. :nice:

Any of the others mentioned would be fine as well, but they too were grossly overpriced when they came out. Only now that they've become a few years old and saturated the market for a whiole now are they coming down in price....and some of they are still too much. There are '03-'04 Cobra owners around here that still insist on asking 30-40K (Canadian) for their cars. No thanks....I'll sign on for a brand new 2010 S197 that despite its lack of blown 4-valve and 6-speed drive train is still an all around better car from the get go than the SN95 ever was!

Realistically though…..unless I hit the lottery, I wouldn’t buy any car for what most dealers have marked them up at. I can wait 6-months for the prices to come down. :D

yeh id "pimp" one to, if it were gave to me. there is no way i can justify paying that kind of coin on a new car, any car. How much do you lose as soon as you sign the papers? i was told its as high as 20% of the price of the car. To me that kind of hit is stupid. That and i dont care for the 2010 mustang, the back end looks like a buick to me.
sorry, i have always and most likely will always buy a used car over a new car. And as for the competition, they are way off the mark on what their cars are worth. the local ford/dodge dealer is still sitting on the same 4 challengers that they have had for months (two v6's a srt and an rt) mainly because of the price.

G-banger it's all good. I just thought about $25K would be a good price for a new GT. I guess I've been out of it for awhile, owning a 91 since 1994 (I have sticker and it was $16,800 for 5.0 auto lx, 17 years ago). Not to kiss your ass but we just put a 6 of blue light (first had it at Canada EPCOT) in the cooler, got it in Dahalonga GA when we were ther for the 6-gap bike ride. I'm 50 and looking for a luxery/sporty daily driver, 350z, R32, 04 Mustang cobra, 03-04 M3. I have a honda 929 for when I realy want to blast it, 3:1 lb to hp ratio. Be safe and Happy Holidays!

seriously man? its 2008. not 1988. look at the prices of a new Camaro. a Vette. ect ect.

damn man are you expecting to pay what people paid back in 1995 ish for a new mustang GT in 2008? inflation. ect. prices go up. you make more. it shouldnt be a big deal, if you can afford to drop that much on a 347 new paint and an interior for you car then whats the big deal paying 35k for a new get? and new gt's at the dealership local to me are 26-30K depeding on opions ect. 35k is like a FULLY loaded vert. even then. thats pretty high if you ask him. how much is the mark up at the dealer you looked at?

You're right Ryan, it's me that is really out of touch. I'll always own at least one fox/sn197 mustang that's 400 -600 hp, turbo BOSS BLOCK block is next. I need a daily driver that doesn't suck as mentioned above "luxery/sporty daily driver, 350z, R32, 04 Mustang cobra, 03-04 M3, ect...

Youre looking in the wrong place. A loaded GT here goes for under 27k, and Galpin Ford in Cali is offering GT's for 18k.

Thanks Ryche, we're heading for Boone tomorrow, although I don't expect to surf too many lots, maybe a few on 421. I'm really after a 03-04 cobra, original owner. Quite a few available in the orlando area, just have to be patient. Great holiays to you, Vann.

A friend of mine went to Galpin ford and they told him that they had 40 GTs to pick from for 18k. You cant complain about that. Of course, Ocala, you can fly to the left coast, buy a GT and have a great drive home, if you could lower yourself. Quite complaining! The best price yet is a fox.
