If I were you, I'd look on ebay and try to find a good deal that is close to you. One that you can actually test-drive. The 5.0 is a bit cheaper to build up. They offer strong low to mid-range torque that really slams you into the seat.
The 4.6 is a smooth running engine with much better top-end power. They have better head-gaskets too.
I've owned an 87 5.0. And, now I have a Vortech Supercharged 2001 GT. All I can say is that technology is great! I've had the blower on for 3 years now and no problems with the stock bottom end. 9psi.
