What are the causes of misfires and what can they do to the car as far as performance goes?

it means that there is no spark in one or more cylinders. it is not good for the car. it can wash the rings out if there is too much fuel.

what other codes, if any did it throw?

maybe a fuel injector is loose... maybe a plug wire is loose or ... maybe you have dirty injectors, etc...
