looking for comments or opinions from those of you with a t-5. the transmissiom i am looking at offers a 2:95 and 3:35 first gear. there is a $200-$250 between the two. i was leaning towards the 3:35 but am having second thoughts. the current incarnation of my king is leaning heavily towards straight line performance. running 3:55 rear gear(may change to 3:80 after the 5 speed is installed), 24.5 inch rear tire, the power band kicks in at around 2200 and is all done at 6200. the torque curve is pretty flat from from 4300 to 6200. thanks, kcobra302
If you'd like to know how each trans will work check out a website called, smokemup.com. You can compare all kinds of gear/trans ratios. This is a kick **s website for all kinds of conversion caclulators. http://smokemup.com/
The 2.95 is the more expensive one isn't it? I believe the 3.35 is the standard factory ratio, while the 2.95 is the Motorsport Z spec gear. The 2.95 has a higher torque rating, but it's up to you whether it's worth the extra money. I guess it depends how much torque you'll actually be able to put through the tranny. Performance-wise, I'm guessing traction will be your biggest problem, and 3.35s would make it even worse.
in a finely tuned state the engine should make right around 400ftlbs at the flywheel. keep in mind this number is based on 3 different computer software programs we used when we built the engine. only real world numbers at the track will confirm the output. the transmission is rated at 450ftlbs. it is a custom built unit using parts from several aftermarket companies. yes 2:95 is the more expensive of the 2. i will check out that link. again, thanks for your opinions.
My comments...I find that my Tremec's 3.27 1st gear + a 3.70 rear makes 1st gear useless at anytime on the street. I have to use 2nd gear to start if I want to pull into traffic quickly. If the car was drag only. the gearing would be great with slicks since it *could* launch quite hard if it had any traction. As it is, 1st is only good for ~30mph at 6K rpm with 26" tall tires.
You have a Tremec in your II? How does it fit. I noticed you have a 351 also so you must have done a little modifying for the engine but I'm curious how much modifying you have to do to get a Tremec in there with the 302.
The only modifying done for the tremec was actually the same required for using a T-5 with a T-5 bellhousing. Driveline was shortened, shifter hole notched forward, driver's side header cut and re-welded to clear the clutch fork and cable, tranmission crossmember modified..
I'm using the 94-95 with the 3:35 first along with the 3:55 rears and as previously said 1st is almost useless for street use. I would like to try going back to the 3:00 and check drivability for a comparison, but have other priorities right now. Dave
