I need t replace my timing belt on an 88 Mustang 2.3L and have been searching for the correct positioning marks. I ahve received 2 different answers. Autozone .. 10* Website: 17-18*. Help!! Mark:Zip2:
You're crossing up ignition timing with camshaft timing. Two different things. The marks you're looking for are not numerical. There are pointers on the cam gear, auxiliary shaft gear and on the crank gear. Each one needs to be pointed in the right direction at the same time. Rotate the engine to #1 TDC before you tear the front of the motor down and you'll see the marks and their references once you get the front cover off. Make a note of where the marks on the gears are pointing and make sure it looks like that when you put it back together.
10 degrees advance. I saw you posted up on another forum about this and got a good response there, so I won't repeat the info here. I will tell you that to loosen the distributor to adjust your timing, you will need a 17MM socket and a long extension. Not too difficult though.
