Okay so I have a 95 GT with a 331 that is carbed and I am looking to delete the power steering. Smog and a/c are already gone. I looked into getting one of those March alternator brackets which would be ideal for my set up. They do not offer one for the 94-95 I am assuming because of the slim profile of the water pump. My question is do I have to swap my timing cover for one off a fox to make it work ?? If so what pulleys do I need ?? Do I have to change my balancer also ?? Can I put a fox water pump on my timing cover and if so will everything line up ?? Just looking for a little info before I open up the old check book. The alternator bracket is pump mount if that helps. Thanks
Honestly, I don't think it's a worth while conversion. The timing cover and water pump, water pump pulley and crank pulley have to be changed to a Fox style, which will make your engine 3" longer. That really cuts into the clearance between your engine and fan. It will fit, but it makes it harder to fix things in there. The alternator on an SN95 is larger also, because it is a 130amp alternator vs the 65amp alternator on the fox. You can modify a stock fox bracket to accept the 130 amp alternator, but there is no guarantee you can get it to fit it in that March bracket. Kurt
I did this swap a few years ago. Go for it, especially if you've already ditched all the accessories. Once your done you can bolt on a "budget" electric water pump and have less bucks in the whole thing than the cost of a 94/95 specific electric wp. This also eliminates the need for 94/95 style aftermarket valve covers. Folks with EFI are still limited to efi style covers though but the interference issue between the vc and alt goes away. You wont have that problem so you can get some sweet and low priced sheetmetal ones if you wanted... I bought a gasket kit, used fox timing cover, bought a new sfi fox style balancer and crank pulley, the March alt bracket and a Moroso electric wp. It's easy, looks good and everything fits just fine... The only thing I had to do was grind a tiny bit off one piece in the March kit to get it to sit flush on the alt, but I was being anal. Because of the Moroso pump I also had to swap one bolt and spacer for a longer one...
Thanks for the info sounds like a plan.. The engine is a scat 331 with the old roush iron heads. It was pretty chopped up when I got it so I am de-rigging everything all back right. I just think that the sn-95 accessories looks way too cluttered for a carbed engine. Will I have any clearance issues with my electric fan ? My plans for the car is the track on the weekends and maybe to the hang out spot on thursday nights so I don't care not to have the power steering. So all I need is the timing cover, water pump, pullies, and a fox balancer ?? Can I use my alternator with the march kit or do I need the fox one ? Will just any old balancer work for the time being ?? Thanks again
No issues with the electric fan on my set up and I think the electric wp sticks out further than the belt driven one... If it's too close, you can remove the cover from the back of it and gain a bit more room. Like I said I got a fox balancer and crank pulley so I don't know if the stock 94/95 style will work and I know the stock 94/95 alt works with the bracket. I covered that earlier too... The only other thing I might do later on down the line is swap the upper radiator hose to a fox one because it gets a little close to the alt. I used a wiretie to hold it out of the way. I just remembered that I had to modify the bracket for the coolant overflow/CCRM. Can't recall exactly what I did but I think I just used some tin snips to clearance it a little. I also moved the CCRM to the area on the pass side framerail where the air box was. That was easy too, I didn't have to extend any wires or anything, I think I just pulled them out of the harness a bit...
