I have a 91 LX 5.0 with a T-5. And just recently I have had problems with the tranny. Reverse has always been a problem but I just put it in reverse then start the car so there is no grinding. But second goes in easy sometimes and not so, on other times. And today, I was at a redlight in 1st and it just popped out and felt like something dropped from underneath. Is it the synchro's? Or should I plan on having it rebuilt? 3rd, 4th, and 5th work normal... Please advise.

could be your clutch, i am going through the same kind of problems right now and i have been advised by mechanichs to go ahead and replace the clutch first. i am having problems grinding in 2nd 3rd and reverse. i am hoping that it is not the trans but even if it was it is recomended to change a clutch during a trans shop i picked up a RAM clutch off of americanmuscle.com and am having my clutch replaced this monday i thought it was the synchros but the trans guy thought it was most likely my clutch due to clutch peddle. said i had collapsed pressure plates. is your clutch easy to press or is it hard? my clutch was hard as heck to press that is why the trans guy thought it was collapsed pressure plates and i bought a clutch.

Well Its kinda hard for me to tell if its hard because my last car was a 5speed srt-4 with STAGE 2CLUTCH. And it was hard to press. But if this helps I have to press the peddle all the way down for it to engage... I was thinking clutch at the beginning. Do you have any suggestions on what clutch to purchase and what do they go for?

clutch isnt going to cause his car to pop out of first gear. your first gear sounds like it is toast. Grinding in reverse is normal with a t5 and even tko's. you have to wait a few seconds or put it into a forward gear first then reverse

After it popped out of gear I had to drive it home about 25miles thru the city and didnt have any other problems out of 1st gear. but like I said 2nd was still acting up. But I just left and came back from the store a lil while ago and had no problems with any gears but reverse.

My trans started popping outa first and it grinded into second and sometimes fourth, I ended up getting a brand new trans, when I drained my old one i had a metallic flake in the trans fluid the whole thing was tearing it self apart on the inside, it wasnt pretty. Even my new trans crunchs a bit into reverse.

Syncros or Forks....Reverse is a pretty normal T5 issue...I go into 5th and then reverse on both of my last T5 cars...Poppingout of first gear sounds like a fork to me

Reverse is unsynchronized in these cars, so you have to shift into forward gear first before trying R.

As for the other prob, you could very well have bent a shift fork. Hard to tell though without dropping the trans and looking inside

The T45, T5, T56, and TKO all Unsynchronized Reverse. If a car is in gear *all the way* it should not be comming out do to a clutch... Clutch merely transfering Torque From motor to trans. However If you have a Bad rail/forks. Or even a Bad Shifter Placement these problems could occur. But If it used to shift good and isnt now, then Your trans getting tired and needs someone to look inside.

Good Luck I have had more problems with t5's then any other trans in the planet. I build a lot of volkwagen transmissions and these T5's make them look bulletproof.
