Transmission Questions Hey Guys, First off, thanks to the forum members who sent me tips on removing the strater (damn third bolt). I have a few more questions for you all: 1. Anyone know the size of the bellhousing bolts (metric size/thread/length)? Mine were pretty rusted on the head and I do not want to reuse them (don't have acess right now as the stang is at my bro's place). 2. Should I replace the T.O. bearing and Pilot Bearing (w/ FMS ones)? I already have the tranny off and I figured I might as well....I have a CFDX clutch on right now...looking through previous owners record to try to figure out when it was done) 3. How important is the clutch fork?...I gauled part of it w/ a prybar getting the clutch cable off (did not bend it..just marred the surface). The area where the cable goes is fine too... 4. Where are the casting numbers on the Borg Warner T-45's? I removed one T-45 from the cobra and have 2 that I bought (I hope the GT one fits otherwise can I modify cross-member to accept GT T-45??) Can my speedo geat work with a GT T-45 or do I have to order one (I have 3.73 gears).? Saw this in another post: "T-45 from 1996-98 GT are different than the Cobra Mustangs. The transmission mount point is moved further back for the Cobras and as well as a 8 tooth drive speedometer gear. Cobras T-45 are equipped with a 7 tooth speedo gear. In 1999 all T-45's were changed to the Cobra specs. Why this was not done earlier is not understood." I will post a pic of the clutch if I can find a clutch alignment tool to put it back on...thinking of replacing that too... Posting on GT and SVT sections to get info from all... Thanks
I am not sure off hand about the thread pitch and size of the bellhousing bolts.. but I would replace the T/O bearing and the pilot bearing.. As far as the clutch fork goes check the pivot ball on the trans and the socket for gauling and other damage if that area is fine and it's not bent then you can reuse them, if any pitting is found replace both of them unless you like a hard hard pedal. As far as the cobra tranny question I am not sure I will try to find out what would need to be done to use the 8 tooth speed sensor in a car designed for a 7 tooth.. you can not use the 7 tooth sensor because it will not mesh up unless you changed the gear in the trans too. i may be wrong on this hopefully somebody who has ran into this problem will post.
Pictures Hello Mike, Thanks for your response. I took a photo of the inside of the bellhousing and the pivot ball seems ok. Any idea on where the borg-warner part no. or casting no. can be found? I am trying to figure out if its a GT or Cobra Transmission. I figure that I might need to change the speedo gear and this would tell me. I also took a picture of the transmission support member as it look like the mount had slots cut into it (unless Ford makes them that way) to allow for either a Cobra or GT T-45 unit to be placed into it. Anyone know how to compress pictures? I would like to post them but each one is 2.2MB from my camera? -Oscar
The speedo gears will mesh and install correctly. The only problem there is that the speedometer won't read correctly until you get the right gear.
More info I forgot to add that I had 3.73 gears before I started the T-45 switch and had the correct speedo...do I still need to change it? Also...foud out that the last time the clutch was changed was 4yrs ago (20k miles since then). Should I leave the clutch on or remove to inspect? (I do not have a clutch alignment tool and would need to buy one....anyone know a store in San diego where I could get one?)
