hey guys im sorta new to the forums as well as the supercharger scene and i need some help! i have a 98 cobra with a vortech v1. the blower was makin a slight grinding noise so we figured maybe the bearings were starting to go bad or worse, so i had it sent out to vortech in california for them to run through it and see what they think needs to be done. i just got a call from them saying that the bearings were shot, the gear case needed to be replaced, and the gears were pretty well trashed. apparently the bearings were so loose he said they slid right out and didnt even require any heat. They told me it would be around $1000 to repair, or i could just upgrade the head unit to a v2 si-trim for $1200. Is this upgrade well worth the extra $200 or is there a different upgrade i should be doing instead of the v2 si trim? if it matters, the motor has stock internals and is running at 12 psi. Just wanted to see what everyone recomends before i make a decision. thanks guys, zach
yea thats what they talked me into at vortech, i bought the car with all the stuff already done to it but vortech told me that blower is about 9 years old and for the extra couple hundred bucks to go with the v2. so i did lol only this time i got the polished one instead of the satin finish.
Good decision. Are you going to have it re-tuned by PHP or was that from the previous owner? If you do get it re-tuned, you may want to consider Lidio at Alternative Auto (in Chesterfield) - he's much closer to you (just south on I-94) and is well known for his tuning ability/experience with Vortech.
pauls tuned it when the previous owner had it. i would def bring it to lidio though if i have to have it retuned. ive heard alot of good stuff about alternative. Will the car need to be retuned for sure with the new blower?
My preference is to always play it safe when dealing with a motor under pressure. I would take it to him after the new blower for peace of mind if nothing else. Often times tuners do what the owners want them to do (well, to an extent) and if the owner wants an aggressive tune then thats what you purchased. It is always good to know exactly where your car sits because you put it there. If you were running on the ragged edge its only a matter of time before you lose it all...
