My bro-in-law is considering an 05 GT with 10K miles. From the looks of the pics on the dealer's website, the only thing done mechanically is an axle-back and a K&N air filter (not a CAI).

Is there anything that you guys know about that was a problem in the 05's? What should he look out for? Any recalls? He's just concerned about it being the 1st year of production. Thanks for any help!

bought mine new 5miles, now have 9600 miles, haven't had any major issues. A rattle in the right side A pillar, did however have the clutch packs re done under warranty when I did a gear change. 355 to 410s.

I too bought brand new in '05 and haven't had any major issues. I now have a little over 18K. Just a couple of rattles as well and a loose battery cable which was an easy fix, had a dealer take care of for me under warranty.

There is a nuisance item with some 05's, where the gas tank wasn't properly ventilated or something like that (there is a TSB on it, but not a recall, unfortunately).

My 05 V6 can be a pain sometimes to fill with gas: I can't go too fast, or the pump stops. And sometimes I have to 'wiggle' the pump nozzle around in the intake tube to make it go away. Sometimes it works fine -- seems totally arbitrary when it's going to be a nuisance to fill.

Other than that, I've had no problems.

My 05 with 45k is having the fuel gauge issue. It first started throwing codes and the gauge would drop to empty, then when I fill up it takes 30 minutes for the gauge to move up to the correct position. Five hundred bucks later they(Ford)put two new sending units in it and it is still on the freak.

I dont believe there are any major Mustang specific problems that pertain strictly to 05s. Or any of the new style model years for that matter. If the car is still under factory warranty (probably will be ending very soon so he might want to consider an extended service plan) then I dont think hell be dissapointed. Im hoping that when I pay off my 95 in two years maybe then Ill be able to afford an 05 body style. By then there should be a newer version out. Wonder what thatll look like...

Check the TSBs and you'll get a good idea of items that could be an issue. Depends on if the previous owner had them taken care of or not.

All-in-all, the 05 turned out pretty good for a new platform on a new tooling/assembly line.

    Waterleaks

Many 05's had a bad water leak from the lower passenger side windshield. Water drips down onto the main fuse block/computer hook-up. Pop open the passenger side kick panel access door & give it a check. Also check the carpet for signs of water. Some 05's also had noisy Ring & Pinion gears, very noticeable on deceleration when you are coming to a stop.

Mines going to the dealer tomorrow for the water leak. Haven't noticed it until 2 days ago as it's hardly rained here since i bought it a year ago. Still love this car.
