Ive been looking for a used car for my daughter who just got her liscence.
Something $5000. or less..... After making about 12 calls to ads in the
Dallas paper on some Hondas, small pickups, about 10 of 12 were Nigerian
car dealers who have 1 or 2 cars for sale... whats up with this?
Are they just trying to make a buck or is this some sort of scam?

for a car that inexpensive i'd try to find a private sale...craiglist.org etc. I've been stung twice by low priced cars at used dealerships...theyre really good at cleaning those things up and making them look well taken care of.

By private dealer do they deal things of other sorts?

But honestly what is the difference between a dealership and a private dealer? They both have multiple cars for sale correct that you have to pay sales tax on. Private owners usually have better prices and you don't have to pay sales tax.

Yeah I want to buy from an individual who actually owns and drives the car. I just
thought that it was strange that every random ad that I called turned
out to be a Nigerian dealer.

    Oh I gotcha now.

Yeah in my town I know of some middle eastern families that buy cheap cars from the impound lot and have like 6 of them for sale in the newspaper.

by "dealership" I was referring to hole in the wall places w/ a desk and 2 pieces of paper...and not very many cars for sale.

I bought a Hyundai Tiburon from a local person privately and had ZERO problems, and sold 4 cars privately that I know had ZERO problems.

I think most people trade in their cars to dealers because they don't wanna be held responsible if someone buys their broken, or about to break vehicle.

Obviously not all used cars are that way but at least when you buy private you can see who drove it.

Just my experiences and opinions :)

What kind of car are you looking for? Here are a few Stangs from the DFW area for under $5k. Two are auto convertibles. I personnally am not a fan of verts. One is a manual hardtop. All are NPI V8's. They may be high mileage Stangs, but we all know how stout those engines are. They actually all have lower then my Stang. My 2000 has 145k miles with no problems. Browse autotrader some, it's fun.

I try my best to stay away from Private used dealers like the black plague. You really dont know what your getting from them.
For example ther is one in Houston that sells newer cars(01-08) with very low miles(20k) and they sell for around $5000-$6000 and they do look to be in good shape to the normal non car nut person that doesnt always know what to look for.
The reason he sells so cheap is every car on his lot(usually about 20 or so)is a salvaged title and he will not tell you unless you ask and when you do ask you have to be very specific about the question or he will try and talk his way around it.

Now sometimes you can get a good deal from a dealer, this last april I bought my wife an 01 Taurus for $5800 with low milage from the Ford dealer. It also had every reciept for anything that has ever been done to it since new from the looks of it,and so far has been a good car...had to buy a battery for it last week.Paint is also almost perfect....just a small scratch on the lower driver side.

You are in Texas. There have been floods in Louisiana and Texas recently. Just beware. They need to supply a "CarFax" at their cost. good luck in your search. The flood cars from Katrina were supposed to be crushed, but...

I hate buying used cars from dealers, but then again with the economy the way it is...they are hurting for business. I'm in need of a cheap winter beater, so I might walk in for $1K in cash and give a few "take it or leave its" and see what I can get.

Yeah for that price I'd try and look for Private Sellers who own the Car. I try and avoid Private Car lots as much as possible, you're running a higher risk of getting a P.O.S. Although not always the case, it's possible to come out with a great Car, just the odds are slimmer. At the same time, sometimes you can get some great deals on Cars at those used lots.

I'm in the market for a Beater as well, I'm either looking at something for under $5K or so, or maybe even Leasing a new Car. It's a buyers market right now and amazing deals can be had, I'd urge anyone thinking of getting a new Car to get on that and go for it!!

We made a deal on a sweet 99 Honda Accord. An Audi Dealer in Dallas had
it advertised as, 1 owner, clean, cheap. So we go down there and it has a
sticker hanging in the window for $6900. But the salesman that I talked
to over the phone had said cheap was around $4000. So we drove it, liked it.
He showed the Carfax and it actually was a 1 owner that lives in Dallas. The
owner had put a total of 130k miles on it. I offered $3500. with ttl out the door,
They countered with $5600. out the door, so we walked out, no deal.
We called back offered $4500 with ttl as we drove home, They said $4400
plus ttl. So we got it for $4850 with ttl out the door. The whole deal took
about an hour, paperwork and all. :D The car looks and drives perfect.
