I have an 83 5.0l and I want to put a new water pump on. My question is, can I put one on from an 86 and up mustang if I change the pulley? Does the waterpump bolt up the same? The only difference I can see is the 86-93 water pump has a bigger shaft where the pulley bolts to. I have an electric fan so my only worry is the pulley. I want a pump with a bigger impeller and I can get a stock one cheaper that an aftermarket one. Anybody have any ideas?

The water pump on my car is a e9te casting so it is a 89 truck remanufactured pump. It works fine on my engine using my 1982 mustang waterpump pulley. I don't think they made any changes to the waterpump impeller shaft diameter, but I may be wrong.

The only thing that you have to make sure of when it comes to water pumps, is that the water pump is for serpentine belt applications. If it isn't, it rotates the wrong way.

According to the official Ford Mustang 5.0 reference book:
"The water pump introduced in 1985 came with a larger (than previous) impeller, which had curved, rather than straight, blades...The new-for-1985 large impeller increased flow-capacity and improved bank-to-bank coolant distribution. Yet another new water pump was put into production for 1986. This one featured a smaller, eight-bladed impeller in a new housing cast with smoother inlet and exit scrolls. The 1986 upgrades combined to produce an efficiency improvement of 11%."

Thanks C&R,
Does your handbook reference the input shaft diameter(the shaft that the pulley bolts to)? I can get a pulley from the local bone yard if need be. My main concern was if it bolted up the same and the inlet and outlet ports were the same. I'll just check them out at Parts America.

Thanks again

It only shows inpeller diameters and part numbers:

1979 3.00 D9ZE-8501-AC
1980-81 3.00 E0ZE-8501-BA
1982-83 3.25 E2ZE-8501-DA
1984 3.50 E4ZE-8501-AA
1985 4.40 E5ZE-8501-BA
1986-93 3.50 E6AE-8501-CA

It also shows that in 1985, Ford switched from a steel to a plastic fan, and it looks like the 82 thru 84 fans share the same configuation (steel, viscous drive, 7 blades, uneven)
