Cranked the car up today and smelled coolant real strong. Let it warm up like normal, so I decided to rev on it a little. Revved on it to about 3grand and its smoking white, which means coolant. I had a TB gasket go out on me and coolant was going in through the intake, but I fixed that and bypassed the coolant bypass(lol). Which in turn, fixed the problem. What other gasket could it be letting coolant get into the combustion chamber? The car wasnt dripping any coolant anywhere. I was helping a buddy of mine do a few things to his, so I never got to look at it, will tomorrow though. What do you guys think it could be possibly?
Pull the intake, and look for leaks from the coolant passages into the intake ports, but more than likely it IS the head gasket... Now, if you did have an EGR coolant leak, it's likely that some of the coolant is still in the system. How long ago did you do that replacement? Also, do you have cats? If so, coolant can build up in those if you had that EGR leak. It should take no more than 15 minutes or so at idle to burn that out though... Do you have a miss at idle? Does it sputter, etc?...
Well let me answer these questions. 1. I fixed the EGR problem about a month ago. 2. No, dont have cats, I use a prochamber 3. Here lately, the car just doesnt seem to have the power it should...I was thinking it could be a headgasket, this brings this back into prespective. And it seems to get hot quickly, even with my griffin radiator and new cooling system with an dual electric fan. But I think my stock gauge just sucks, need an autometer.
If you're also having temperature fluctuations, I'd bet it's a head gasket failure. Change the oil ASAP to see if it's milky or discolored. It's likely you'll SEE water coming out when you first remove the drain plug if it's a bad gasket failure. If you change the oil with the car cold and sitting for a while beforehand, it's more likely you'll see water coming out if it's there. Letting the car sit for a bit will allow time for the oil and water to seperate better, putting the water at the bottom of the pan. For your sake, I hope that's not the problem.
Headgasket change will be a weekend project. I'm not scared to do it at all, actually im hoping thats whats wrong with it. So I can change em out and get the problem fixed and I wont have to worry about it anymore. Whats the Part Number for stock headgasket? Dave
Hey Dave...sorry about the problem...but I wouldn't do a stock headgasket...or it could very well happen again...I would get a nice headgasket that has the provisions for boosted applications... Good Luck with it
It does sound like you blew a head gasket(s) but before you do all that work and spend around $100 why don't you give it a compression check? Did you have anything unusual in your coolant....in your oil????
Get it fixed yet Dave? I had a EGR problem back when I was EFI. I suppose you changed the oil, cleaned the spark plugs, etc afterwards? Sometimes if you put on a new gasket, and don't clean it good (scrapper, thinner, or something similar) then it can leak again (don't ask me how I know )
