i have a random question i just got back from hiking the havasupi trail at the grand canyon today
(left the bottom at 3am haha that was fun) but anyways on the drive i was reading a mustang monthly magazine and it had an article about the adjustable motor mounts for mustangs i was curious if they would be helpfull in putting in a 351w into a 66 mustang they adjust from side to side and then front to back just a thought and was curious if anybody had tried them i believe the company that makes them is rmp aka ron morris performance out of modesto, california just curious but yea hope everyone had a great weekend and all is well (ps if you havnt gone down havasupi trail and are ever into hiking 11 miles or so in and 11 or so out its BEATUIFULL) :D

the real issue with a 351 in a first generation mustang isnt side to side, or front to rear, as much as it is up and down. if you use the 66 motor mounts, and even the lowest of aftermarket intakes, you are going to hit the hood. best bet for this swap is the 65 style motormounts (one piece frame mounts.)

i have heard the 65 mounts are the best i was just curious if the adjustable mounts helped wiht any of the clearance issues or if the adjustability was so small that it didnt really matter yea that was the first thing i looked for when i saw the mojnts if they adjusted up or down but oh well they didnt:rolleyes:

The side-to-side adjustment might help when putting a 351w in a 65-66. I have a 351w in my 65 using 66 style mounts and headman shorty headers. I have plenty of room on the driver side, but my passenger side clears the shock tower by about 1/16". Needless to say it rubs a little. If I had the adjustable mounts it would probably clear both sides fine.

As far as hood clearance, with a performer intake (low-rise) and hi-po style breather with 2" filter, hood clearance is 1/4" or less. I do have a 1/4" spacer under my carb to help insulate it which eats up some hood clearance. I've been contemplating changing over to the 65 style mounts to get some more hood clearance. Even at that, I don't see how some guys fit medium-rise intakes such as the stealth under a stock hood. Does anybody know how much the 65 mounts lower the engine compared to the 66 style mounts?

I have the Ron Morris ones and am happy with them. The RMP mounts are the same height as stock 66 mounts. The stock 65 mounts drop the engine about 1/2" below the stock 66 height. HOWEVER, the RMP mounts are now available in a 1/2" drop, so this may be what you need. :D :nice: I wish I would have waited for these ones... :bang: Oh, well--no real regrets as I need the height for ground clearance. :o

wow that sounds awesome taht they have a 1/2 inch drop now and i am pretty sure i am planning on the shortys for the headers just because it seemed like people had a lot less trouble with them and they seem to be cheaper although i am not sure if im looking at the right set can anybody give me a part number for the headmans or other shortys

65' motor mount drop the motor approximately 1" lower than the 66' and newer mounts. The 65' mounts also allow you a little leeway to move the engine left and right, plus front and rear. These are 65' mounts:

It is best to run a bolt or 2 through the rubber mount to strengthen it.

I run the 65' mounts with my 393 stroker. I originally used a Stealth intake and with a 2.75" high open air filter and had between 3/8" and 1/2" of hood clearance. With a couple of changes to a drop base air filter housing, you could even end up with nearly 1" of hood clearance. Yes, I did say nearly 1".

Currently I have a Vic Jr. intake installed on my 393 and, even with a 1/4" under carb spacer, I have 3/8" of hood clearance. It all has to do with planning and doing a few mods.

How to get more hood clearance:

1. Use 65' motor mounts.
2. Purchase a chokeless carb, such as a Holley HP. The air filter flange is physically lower than the models with a choke.
3. Modify a drop base air cleaner base. Find one with a lot of drop (I bought a Holley version from Advance Auto) and mill off most of the ring that holds the base in the air. Then you must modify the base further to clear the external float adjusters. I created sealed tunnels for the adjusters to fit into:

A Vic Jr installation requires angle milling .300 off the front of the carb pad. Then if fits just fine with the other mods I suggested.

I just spoke to Ron Morris about his mounts and he told me that there isn't but a 1/8" of height difference between the 65 and the 66 mounts. He told me that he kept hearing the rumors and decided to measure them out and that was what he found. Is this true? I ordered a set of his adjustable mounts anyway because my engine is sitting cockeyed and I would like to cure that, but has anyone else measured the actual difference between the 2 years?

and Dennis, I agree with Spade, that looks awesome. :nice:

I cannot say I have ever measured them, but I know they are lower. Rumor is the 1" that I quoted. Anybody have both type of mounts and some free time to do a measurement????

I do believe that there is more than 1/8" difference though as header manufacturers almost always recommend the 66' and newer motor mount to increased engine compartment clearances--at least that is true with swap headers.

I would be very interested in finding out, but I have neither the time or both sets, I will when the new ones arrive though. :)

I have the JBA shorty headers along with the flaming river R&P setup, with the 5 speed. All that along with someone who has the barest knowledge of older cars is throwing things all out of whack. I'm hoping that these adjustable ones will be able to put things a little more right. It would be nice to get that all squared away prior to building a 393 for this booger down the road too. :nice:
