What all are you running for stereo setups? I've got a 66 coupe and i'm in the prossess of redoing/customizing the inside and am looking for ideas on stereo and intereor ideas too

I'm copying the rear seat divider in plywood and bolting a box to that, and a pair of Dayton Hi-Fi 12s. I'm looking at different 2x125w RMS amps. Then, I've got a set of 6x9s to go in the package tray and a dual speaker setup to go in the dash. The headunit will be alpine, mounted under the dash, on the floor, or in a console.
In the meantime, I've got a dual speaker setup for the dash (free), 6x9s for the rear ($20), a headunit I got out of a dumpster, and a pair of "super delux" 12s ($50), along with a pair of visionik 70w RMS amps ($22ea).
For the record, I'm neither cheap nor irish.

Unless your dash is already cut for 1/2 din size, you'll want to put the head unit in a custom made console under the dash or glovebox. Another option is if you don't care for radio or CD, do a search, there are people who have hooked up an iPod/MP3 directly to amps.
I had speakers in the dash before, and couldn't stand it. I now have 6 1/2" in the Kick panels that ROCK.
You could probably get away with good 6x9" in the rear deck, but for good low bass, you want additional sub(s) with amp in the trunk.
I made a custom box for my Rockford Fosgate Punch 10s (heavy), but I'm now thinking I should have done something like that.

I have my car at the shop or I'd attach some new pics of the stereo system in mine. I also have the plywood divider behind the rear seat with two 12's two 6x9s in the rear decklid, 4" mids in the kick panels and 4 tweeters in the dash. Disk changer mounted up in the trunk with the amps hidden under the rear package tray.

ive got a jvc digifine head unit i bought off ebay, digitally tuned, 2 knob in the dash,it runs 2 jbl stereo amps, 75 watts/ch for a set of jbl 6" in the kicks, and a jbl 150w for a set of jbl 6x9;s in the package tray, and the other channel runs a set of jbl 10's in a custom enclosure behind the rear seat.the nice thing about this setup is that the head unit has an aux. in, which interfaces my ipod.
i started to put a bitchin sound system in my coupe... then i rebuilt the engine... now all i have is 842 suround sound. 8 cylinders edelbrock 4 barrel and 2 flowmaster 40s. i found i liked listening to the engine more than the radio.
i ended up putting the soundsystem in my truck since its much quieter.

Cut the dash.
Install a nice new head unit.
Ditch the window cranks, install power windows and mount the tweeter
of your component speakers where the window crank used to be.
Toss out your rear seat and install an Amp platform and an CD changer
Hack up your rear trap door and install some big 6"X9" Infinity Kappa's

Subscribing. Looking for some options to fit the stock dash opening in a 66. Been looking at the Custom Auto Sound stuff, but seems expensive for what you get.
i had a custom autosound that i bought before the jvc...it was really chintzy. i couldnd bring myself to run it through a set of amps as high end as the jbl's. i found the digifine on ebay... the fellow i bought it from digs the old knob type headunits up, and refurbishes them,i paid 175.00 for it, and it has 1 set of full range rca's out, a set of sub woofer outs, and an auxilary input. the only thing i miss is a remote...iirc, both pioneer, and kenwood made headunits to fit in the mustang dash back in the day.
Custom Auto ***** is more like it, a nice 1 year lifespan while sounding possibly worse than the 1966 original. Don't do it.

This deck will fit in dash and then you just get a 10 disc changer for you trunk with the fm transmitter for the radio. That way you keep it stock or else you can mount it in you glove box.

I have a Sansa unit for my cars.
I have all the wiring done and can go from car to car with it and hundreds of songs.
The Sansa units also have FM tuners in them.
As far as CDs go, they are ancient history.
I haven't used a CD in years now!
Currently I use factory AM/FM stereo head units and modulators to play the MP3 on FM, then through the amps.
However, my plan is to start wiring my pigtails straight to the amps and cutting out the middle man.
Sounds much better when the MP3 doesn't go through FM.
The head units will stay for looks since they are stock.
It really depends on what you are looking for. If you want the best sound at the best price then I would go with some of the custom recommendations others have mentioned here. If you want original looks with good sound then go with Custom Auto Sounds USA-66.
I have one in my 66 and I like it a lot.
It is way better than the other Custom Autosounds stereos. I had a USA 6 and hated it. It was cheaply constructed and sounded terrible. 
This one is an exact appearing metal bodied replica with 200 watts and MP3/IPOD/RCA hookups. It was a little pricey but the quality is good and it looks exactly like an original, which is what I wanted. But if original looks don’t concern you, then go with an aftermarket name brand setup. You can really build a great system to meet your specific needs/desires that way. But please, don't cut your dash! Contruct a custom console, put it in the glove box; do anything but cut the dash.

My '68 had an older Pioneed AM/FM Cassette with Pioneer 6" in the kick panels and 6X9's in the package tray. The HU was made before the stereo manufacturers thought it was a good idea to ditch the dual turny knobs and repace them with buttons for all the functions, so although it definitely didn't look original, it didn't look totally out of place either. It sounded pretty decent, too, I used a tape deck adapter to play iPod and Discman on it, and it always worked really well for me.

the sides are cut to the concave countour of the dash.Theres 2 tabs on the dash with holes that were used to secure the glovebox so the sides are screwed there.I used 1/2 MDF and covered it in black tweed that matched my interior.The face is big enough to mount the stereo and a 1/2 din EQ.
