gas mileage really shouldnt be the determining factor tho. you want economy buy a civic.

FWIW...with the proper rings 347s will not burn oil even with an interjecting wrist pin. the 347s that burnt oil had very low tension oil rings and wore very quickly..they did this initialy to squeeze out a little more HP.

I totally agree. The difference between 331 and 306 aint much anyway. My 414 is going 240 miles on a tank easy. I will check again..

I'd say if you have to get a new shortblock, get the bigger cubes even if the supporting H/C/I are on the small side for it. Sure, it won't be on par with cars with the properly matched HCI for their strokers, but it'll make more TQ and be a better platform to build from than a 306. I went with a 331 for one reason and one reason only, the turbo kit I have had a relatively small turbo for it and the 331 would work well with it, and with the T76 I have since upgraded to. It was a compromise because I didn't know what turbo I'd use when I built the stroker. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have bought the turbo and I'd have a higher compression 363ci NA setup.

Sidebar: its amazing to me how the 347 "oil issues" rumors still exist. I read about that when i first joined this site and guys proved it otherwise. Is that EVER going to die?!?!?!?

I know for a fact it will not go away within the next decade.

The oil burning is still a fact, because it still happens.

It will always happen when there is incorrect oil ringland pieces used and/or engine assemblers.

To say that all 347 will not burn oil is an inaccurate statement as well.

A solid ringland is still better than a cut ringland for wrist pin clearance for pure longevity. Luckily, there are a few top-notch engine builders out there to close the gap.

Since your looking to get new heads/cam/intake...get the 331. Get a custom cam from one of the big 3 custom guys and a good tune should get you to pass tx smog and run more than enough to blow up the AODE. Might want to look at an edlb./TFS/Holley intake over the gt40 if you go 185's.

BTW, thanks for serving...Wifes cousin is in the Marine's currently. Lucky bastage is stationed in HI. Take care.
