Old folks and Mustangs don't mix

Well, I spent 18 months rebuilding little 87 "stang", new engine, tranny, suspension, interior, brakes, conv top, fuel system, stereo, etc.. I was just getting ready to start prepping it for its spring paint job, when BAM.... Yep, old geezer in his new Nissan truck decided to make an illegal...

    Question about removing exhaust

Pulling exhaust Pulling the entire exhaust system is a real bear (if not impossible on jacks). An easy fix is to cut the pipe behind the muffler (do a clean cut). When you install, use the short connector pipe you can get from almost any parts house to put the two parts back together. Use...

    oil pump shopping...dear Abbey

Oil Pump Just checked Discount Autoparts and they are showing a different pump for the 87 turbo and the 87 mustang or 93 ranger (non-turbos). I would say you should get what it requires, probably the turbo requires more capacity or higher pressures. Dave

    Swap Gods are smiling

Whew, done (almost) !!!! So, the basic engine swap is complete. Spent plenty of time making sure all timings are close, oil pump is working and most things are tight and on the first crank it fired right up. Granted, it is idling at about 2k rpm, but that'll get fixed tomorrow. Here's...

    2.3 Flywheels

Duh Level Well, talk about feeling stupid. Here's the tale.... I first put the flywheel on the crank, it doesn't line up. So, no problem, I figure I'll use the flexplate to find the proper bolt alignment and then use the flexplate to determine the correct flywheel position. (following so...

    2.3 Flywheels

Oh you are going to love this! Ok, the old engine was an 87 with 5 spd. The "new" engine, bought from a friend's junkyard, was rebuilt using an 86 aerostar block and god knows what else. It was a good rebuild job, tolerances are dead on. Now, here is the problem. The "new" engine came from...

2.3 to 2.3 dual plug swap, help

Old School is Me I'm of the ancient ones, so I got my "need for speed" out of my system in the 60's and 70's. 570 hp '55 Chevy, Lotus Europa, Turbo Opel GT, '66 396 Corvette, 327 Vega (not to mention the assortment of motorcycles, Norton 850, Kawasaki 500 Mach III, Ducati 450 Desmo). Now...

2.3 to 2.3 dual plug swap, help

The Head Swap Thanks all for the comments on this... After reading what you all said and then talking with my nephew (who I found out works in a shop that specializes in Mustangs) I'm going to use the 93 block which was recently rebuilt and the 87 heads. I also figure I'll use the roller...

    88 2.3 N/A to 93 2.3 N/A conversion issue

Looks like I'm following your lead Hi, Dave here, I'm the one doing the 93 to 87 conversion. Does your friend remember what all had to be done in the conversion? I'm considering the idea that someone posted in my thread, using the block from the 93 with the heads from the 87 and the roller...

2.3 to 2.3 dual plug swap, help

2.3 swap Hi all, Well, the reason for the swap, first the replacement engine was dirt cheap and now that I'm into it, it looks like a recent rebuild, it is super clean internally (from the oil pan side, haven't removed the head yet.) The car it came from was in great shape, until it got...

2.3 to 2.3 dual plug swap, help

Hi all, Well, I solved the problem of the engine knock, it was a rod bearing. Anyhow, I just got a 93 2.3 in excellent shape with the twin-plug head for a great price. So I'll swap the old 87 engine for the 93. 5spd manual tranny in the 87, new engine comes from an automatic. Has...

    Convertable top question.

Top replacement I have an 87 convt project car. The old top was shot and so after hearing all of the insane prices for labor, I decided to replace it myself. Bought the top and plastic window on eBay for $130, new condition. I spent 6 hours SLOWLY removing the old top. I photographed...

Hi All, This one is driving me nuts. 87 mustang, 2.3L EFI, 5 spd. Car has 140,000 miles on it. There is an engine knock in the lower, rear passenger side area of the engine. Did a compression test with following results... #1 - 160 lbs #2 - 160 lbs #3 - 180 lbs #4 - 160 lbs The...

    Convertible Top Install

Hi All, I'm new to the forum, so I hope I'm posting in the right place. If not, forgive me, I'm an idiot. :-) Anyway, I've bought my son an 87 2.3L Convertible for a project car. We'll be replacing the top this summer. I know, I should go to a shop, but funds are scarce and this is a...
