In the early '65 cars, you could get the 170, 260, or 289 with 4v carb. In late '65, you could get the 289 with the 2v carb, or the HiPo version.

Correct! I still have the bill of sale for my first Mustang, ordered on April 18, 1964. It is a 65 convertible, silversmoke grey with black top and interior, 289 4v, 4-speed, Rally Pac, backup lights, deluxe belts, etc. (That's a "D" code engine.) When Ford came out with the rest of the 65 models in the fall of 1964, they dropped the 170 and 260 engines from everything, replacing them with the 200 and the 289 respectively. They went from generator to alternator, too. They also introduced the Mustang fastback (called 2+2) at the same time.

The press release info that I have read for the '05 Mustang keeps referring to the 64 Mustang with a 289 cubit motor. I don't think there was a 289 in 64. Wasn't it a 260?

You'll never find a Ford representative that will say they produced a 1964 model. Enthusiasts came up with that 64 1/2 thing... but yes there was a 289. Engines for early 65 (64 1/2) were 101 hp-170ci-6 cyl...164hp-260ci-8cyl...and the 200hp-289ci-8cyl. Late model 65's came with 120hp-200ci-6cyl...200hp-289ci-8cyl...and 225hp-289ci-8cyl. The 271hp, 289 hi-po came out in June of 64.

Does that help?

LOL, that looks funny to see "backup lights" listed as an option! Was there an option for bigger wheels? I seem to remember seeing some with 15's, or maybe it was 14, were 13's standard on those old Mustangs? And yes, I always remember the first Mustang being called a '65, not a 641/2!

Yep, backup lights were an option.

Yes, there were optional wheel sizes, except with the 289 HiPo (K code). Six cylinder cars came standard with 13" wheels, with 14" as an option. V-8s came with 14" standard and 15" were optional except for the HiPo, where 15" were standard. Actually, the 14" six cylinder wheels (which had only 4 lug bolts) weren't a popular option, so are fairly rare today.

The only year Ford did a "1/2" year back then was in 1963. It caused so much confusion (I had a problem registering my 63 1/2 Falcon Sprint 260 4-speed, for example) that they didn't do it again. The introduction of Mustangs proudly proclaimed "First of the 65s!!!" Proof is the serial numbers, where the first digit is the year ("3"=1963, "5"=1965, etc) in all Fords of the era.
