A/c "popping"....??

I've noticed lately that on really hot days when I start my car and turn the A/C on, I hear a large "POP" from under the hood. It happens pretty much every time I turn on the A/C but it always happens just one time and never again until the car has been off and cooled down and then started again. Anyone have any experience with this? Seems to me like some kind of leak in the A/C system.

There is a clutch which engages the AC compressor. You may be hearing the clutch make some noise when it locks up. Why it would make noise and only when cold... I am not sure. But from your description, that is the event which occurs at this time.
