Nick's "lvndpst" Restoration (and Slight Modification) Thread

  • Sponsors (?)

Well, I am no @Davedacarpainter restoration expert, but I did find a nice clean factory distributor cover. Needs shined up, but I am happy to have one. Never liked the look of all the spark plug wires, especially when I put a red MSD replacement cap on one of my old cars. Boy I tell you what, if only spring would hurry the F up and get here, I have some mondo cleaning/restoring plans to carry out... I hate winter in Iowa.

If you use an explorer intake, it still looks "stockish" and you can have it ported just the same. Not to mention you can buy the intake, have it ported, and still be cheaper than a GT-40.

And you can paint it two tone for effect, seen one on a fox that matched the two tone car colors, looked good,
I don't think theres much difference in performance

I also vote explorer. Put the effort into finding and early one with the internal EGR. They come with 65mm TBs that can be converted for Mustang use and 19# injectors with a better, wider spray pattern. You can pick them up for $75-100 locally and have Tmoss port the lower.

A little elbow grease, a 70mm EGR spacer and convert the TB and you get a decent performance upgrade that can look bone stock with a stock intake plaque

I picked one up myself for $75 just for the lower to send out to port, but if I didn't already have a Ford 1993 cobra intake, I'd totally run the explorer upper

Is that your intake?

Hey man, those wheels look great! Where have I seen those before?

It will look way better once I get my stance in check.

And I really wanted silver actually, but couldnt find them. Chrome was on sale for super cheap, and looks good with my color combo. If I keep them long term, I may have them painted silver to match the lower portion of the body. You can see the detail of the spokes a lot better in silver than with the chrome.

I didnt realize the stock intake plaque fit on the explorer uppers. I thought they had a different shape. I am fully aware that they offer a small performance increase, but did not know about that early internal EGR feature. I may just look into that option knowing now that you can make it resemble the stock one so closely. I know they can be had cheap, and that one you posted really does look to fit the bill. Thank you, sir.

I'm partial to the chrome.

I love the style of the tubular intakes as well, but I think you missed my post where I said I almost bought one and decided not to last minute thinking I like the stock look.
You only like the stock "look" because Stock "looks" cheaper than modified. Stop playin'

Here's the scenario:

The Mystery Millionaire walks up to you and gives you a wad of un-attached 100 dollar bills. (we'll just call them TJ's for short).
Not the kind of money that you'd retire from work, or pay off your debts with,...just some frivolous fun money (like 5k)

I'm so saying that the stock look would be sitting in the corner of your garage next to your not stock looking hood.

Wanna bet?

No seriously, it is really bothering me that I changed the wheels on the car. I think they look good, but I already miss the turbines. So much so that I reached out to a custom wheel manufacturer that helps the Ring Brothers, and was quoted $1500 per wheel to have them recreated in 18" diameter. The only reason this car caught my eye was because of being identical to my high school car. This car represents an era I cannot go back to, and the more I change it, the less it takes me back to that. I seriously may end up with 17-18" one off turbines at some point, and a stock looking stroker under the hood. Had this car not been in my back yard (figuratively speaking), I would have searched out a solid black or silver one that was already modded to my liking after the SRT8 was paid off.

I always wondered why some people used to have those little skate board tires stickin a mile out of the econo-box they drove. I always said to myself...."How is it that anybody can think that looks good?"

I guess it's the same way I think about a turbine wheel...

It's all about perspective:

Two guys die, and by the grace of God end up at the pearly gates and meet St.Peter.. St Peter tells the guys that he's pairing up each of the two w/ a forever soul mate, and hooks them both up with two of the most ugly female angel forever soul mates in all of heaven.

These two guys can't believe their fate. They drag along for several days,... soon the days turn into weeks. One day they come across an old friend, and they can't believe their eyes.......Their friend has the most beautiful female angel forever soul mate they have ever seen.

They take a picture of her with their angel iphone 10's.

Somethin ain't right.

They go back to St. Peter and say,...Hey! how come we got these two ugly assed female angel forever soul mates and our friend gets her:

They show Pete their pics.

Well,....Peter says,......You weren't perfect while you were alive. These ugly female angel forever soul mates are your punishment.
Your friend is her punishment.

You and your thoughts and words. Turbines are ugly, I fully agree. But on this particular car, they complete the look of a car that literally solidified my love for Mustangs. Changing that look already has me feeling like I took the cross off the wall and turned it upside down.

Here is the Thundercolt before I bastardized the car:

Now those wheels that are on that car are ugly no doubt...but there's no way in hell I'd have a problem putting them in a stack and putting a new set of wheels on that car if i was to come across it's clone some day.

Man oh man do I wish I still had my old fastback. If I'd only known then...

I understand your thoughts. SOmedays, I wish I had my original 10-holes back as that's how my car looked when I was in HS.

Only reconciliation is that towards the end of HS, I slapped a set of 16" pony wheels on the car and loved them. Only reason I got rid of them was to go 5-lug. BUT, now there are 17", 5-lug pony wheel options that have me thinking.....

18" turbines would be interesting to see. I think I'd stick to 17" though.

But yeah, there are some days I wish I could put the car back to the way it was when I drove it around in HS. That means porno red interior, and AOD transmission along with 4-lug drum brakes. I think I'd appreciate it for a couple days...and then want to modify it right back again. I remember vividly in HS wanting to do all this stuff and not being about to afford it. M-2300K kits were available for sale and $2500 in 1999 dollars. I couldn't afford that. So now I'm at a point where I can do all the things I wanted to in HS...basically building, today, the car I wanted in HS. So I justify my mods that way.

That is how I justified the 5 lug/wheel swap. In HS I desperately wanted chrome Cobra R's, but when it came time for 5 lug wheels recently, that was no longer my first choice even though I still almost bought them for that reason. In terms of modding, we mod because we want to scratch our adrenaline itch, and I have the SRT for my performance itch IMO. Just this morning I coaxed it down a lonely stretch of desolate new divided highway beyond where my '11 5.0 was even capable of achieving. I will say that even though I did not reach the claimed 173 mph top speed, I was within 8 mph when I let off due to an upcoming curve in the road, and it really was still pulling. So for the stang, I really think just getting a little more out of it with a 331 stroker kit, heads and cam, and keeping it basically stock is really going to be just fine. I dont want to have to swap out the T-5 for a TKO even. This car is just too original to F with in my eyes. With the short wheel base, lack of safety features (traction control, ESP, yada yada), and remotely light weight, these cars are a lot of fun even with stock power levels.
