Project Notchblack: Black Interior Progress Thread w/ Pics

In 25 years when a rare, mint, factory porno red interior is fetching 5x the price of black at barrett-jackson, we'll all look like fools.

In 25 years, if a ford mustang notchback car that's VIN'd as a 4 banger with a red interior and is fully restored is actually AT Barrett-Jackson, I'll buy it myself out of spite to myself. Somehow I'm not terribly worried. Besides, that totally red interior is on nearly every white mustang in Atlanta. I've seen it a bunch...and while black is cliche, it's also A) my favorite color, and B) my little way of throwing back to my very first car (my 91 LX...factory black on black).

And I will say, that first photo makes the car look a little better than it actually is. It looks brand new in the photos, but the carpet needs to go, and it's still a 16 year old car with 140k on the ticker.

Screw what everyone says, even if it was clean, red is ugly, black is the way to go. Now if it was factory tan I could see people screaming at you for changing the color, I could even condone people sending threats for something like that, even though the factory tan foxes are ugly, its super rare, red is a different story. I have a factory black interior, and if I got another fox, no matter how clean the interior is, red, grey, or blue, first thing id do is go black. People talk alot about I woulda given you this much for it, but when it comes down to it, you woulda been sitting on that car for a while waiting for someone to actually pay for it and pick it up. Red interiors are not exactly a hot item.

That's why i saved my red dash when i swapped my black interior in. It was WAY too clean to trash, and nobody wanted to buy it...so i'll just save it.

I have a red dash and a black dash squirreled away ;)
 
Whats NEXT people crying about 4 lug conversions come on this is just ridiculous, red is never desirable there are few that look really nice, but even those dont look good next to the black.

all the foxes around here w/ red interiors never sell for anything great, there has been a mint 89 gt w/ 75k on it and it had been for sale for over a year at 4k
 
For all you that were complaining about me painting a red interior, here's a red interior you can snag for $400 bucks in my neck of the woods.

Told you they were a dime a dozen around here. Can't find a white fox without one.

As for my project, finished the carpet and dash today. Hope to finish most of the little trim pieces tomorrow, and next Monday or Tuesday, I'll have the rear quarters and headliner completed. From there it'll just be a waiting game until I can find some decent seats, seatbelts, and I'm gonna snag a cheap black wheel out of the local pull-a-part.

Pictures didn't turn out so good today, but I hope to have some pic updates tomorrow.
 
Im actually curious how this turns out. I wanted to do something like this to mine, except I would just buy a new headliner and such.. And my door panels are shot so i would get new those too. But the for the dash and center console and all the plastic trim, I think this would be an easy way to go. What exactly are you using to paint it with, and prep it with, and all that, I want details as I been looking for someone to do this.

I have done this conversion already. You just have to be thorough in the cleaning process. I also used duplicolor adhesion promoter (very important step). I have complete conversion pics in my progress thread.
 
I'm using Dupilcolor Vinyl and Fabric Paint for the soft vinyl and Krylon for the hard plastic (all gloss black). The passenger tray came out fine after being painted, the headliner not so much. It's not bad, but it's kind of rough now. I'll stick with it for now, but it'll get replaced in a few weeks.

All you have to do is make sure you clean everything before painting and remember to let it cure. If you have the option of letting everything set for a few days, it'll turn out better when you put it all in. Also, factory black foxbody seatbelts are EXPENSIVE! (in the $400 range for all four), AND the seatbelt style changes in '91 so if you're '91-'93, you can get 94+ style seat belts, but I think the receiver is different (and attached to the seat itself).

All in all it's a fun little project. The dash sucks though...especially by yourself. Just saying.
 
I did this project about 10 years ago to my 1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula. The car was dark blue with a trashed baby blue interior. I took everything appart and taped off the rest, even the dash and spent weeks converting everything. i found a rear black seat int he junk yard as well as the seat belts....don't paint seat belts unless you want to ruin your clothes. i had the front seats recovered in black vinyl. All and all after i was done it looked amazing and factory. Take you time and tape things off and when you can take the pieces out and spray them seperatly. if you cut corners you will defiantly see and it won't look good. Heck i sprayed the green carpet in my 78 bronco black and it turend out good....wore a bit after a while. Good luck and keep the pics coming
 
Had a slight change of plans because of the seatbelt issue. I decided to go ahead an gut that interior and start from the carpet up. If you've never installed carpet, make sure you have a buddy. It's a pain in the ass by yourself. Definitely a great feeling when you finally get it in and vacuumed. Completely changes the car. Dash does the same thing.

It's definitely important to take time on this. You can see I have a lot of little pieces still off. Most of them are painted, but they need time for the paint to cure. Nothing in the car will ever be resistant to scratching, but it's pretty easy to touch up. The dash is a pain by yourself!

That's as the car sits so far. I expect to be done with everything but seats and steering wheel on Tuesday. Worst case Friday or so. I'm in no rush.
