T5 downshift problems

I bought a used 86 V8 Mustang T5 for my 65 fastback. I removed cover to inspect gears visually. Everything looked exceptionally well for a 20 year old tranny. Seems to shift OK on the bench but when installed for a road test it doesn't seem to want to downshift from 5th to 4th without first going to 3rd. This happens only when the car is in motion. Once stopped it will go from 5th to 4th. . Anything I can do?

Sounds like the 4th gear synchro is worn out.

Only other thing I could think of is the clutch not fully disengaging, but I think you'd have problems with other shifts as well.

I think it's time for a rebuild.

As I was driving today I did notice that I would have to come to a complete stop to shift into 1st. without grinding. I found I could hold the clutch in for several seconds and was able to shift into 1st with a little grind. The clutch is new with a cable setup. I thought I had it adjusted correctly, maybe not.
:hail2: BTW, Thanks for the lightning fast reply.
