I am trading my brand new 19" wheels for some new 20" wheels. Does the tires shop just swap over my TPMS(s) and bands to the new wheels....or do I buy new? How does this work?

The sensors are reuseable, as for the bands it all depends if they are like the factory one that are compressed together no, if they are aftermarkets (usually look like large hose clamps) then just unscrew them swap them over.

I wouldn't think you would need the sync tool if you reuse the factory tpms sensors. Am I wrong here?
I think you are correct, I re-used mine when I got new wheels and didn't have to sync them.

I can see needing one for new sensors but reusing the old ones shouldn't change anything.
How are the sensors powered? I'm assuming it is just a battery. If so how often do they need to be changed?
I'm not sure how they are powered. They may recharge with rotation.

I thought about that too but I figure they probably use a battery that lasts as long as the average set of tires then can be replaced when a fresh set of tires is put on. Oh well not a big deal. Just being inquisitive, I can't help it.

well batteries are supposed to last 5-10 years... (glad i have an 05 and wont have to worry about this ever)
Even if you get bands from ford they're the screw on type (pressed is factory only) and can be reusable if you decide to change wheels again soon.
i miss when wheels had rubber valve stems and nothing else... nice and easy, all these sensors are annoying to change around.
