I was throwing a P0308 code which says a cylinder 8 misfire i went and had my plugs changed and had a compression check on the engine done.. cylinders 1-7 were pushing out 210 compression while cylinder 8 was pushing 180... the specialist says he has to take the motor out to fix this problem which is 600 (out and back in) + whatever it costs to fix it... and he says while its out and he has everything open he reccomends just going to forged internals (the kit is $2499.00) and if i go that route it will be another 600 to put all the old engine parts on the new forged set.

keep in mind i just bought the car a month ago and have been fixing it ever since... bought for 17500.00 put 1500.00 into it to fix it and now im stuck with this problem... what should i do? any suggestions?

Go rent an engine hoist for $30 a day(or buy one if you can't borrow one from someone you know), pull the motor yourself, and replace the rings or whatever it is thats causing the loss in compression on the 8th cyl. Thats my advice. DSS also sells Forged Rod and Piston kit for the 4.6 for $1400.00.
Goto PISTON & ROD KITS

no way should you pay 3700 for all that. heck you can get a full short block for 1999 if you look in the right places, instead of just an assembly for 2499. good luck with it though, sorry to hear about all your problems :(

First of all no offense but you paid too much for that car. A bullitt is nothing but a GT. There is nothing special about it really. Assuming it had 2001 mileage on it 40-60k id guess you should be able to get that car for 16500.

Mach1's are a much better buy.

Now that thats over with it sounds like the mechanic is just trying tomake some money off of you. Do you know any reputable mechanics near you that someone else has talked about? Maybe get a second opinion because it can't hurt.

actually when i bought the car it was a good deal... i got it for 17500 it only had 26,000 miles on it and it was already supercharged (yippee) when i got it it private party blue booked about 18k + it was already suprcharged (yippee) with a 4500 blower.

and no i dont know any reputable mechanics because when i bought the car i was extra anal about making sure it was ok because it was supercharged of course... so i took it to ... count it... 3 mechanics and 2 of them basically kicked the tires... looked at the brakes and slapped their tongues out drooling all over it saying "omg i wish i had the balls to buy this car but my wife would kill me." the third one... well... not much better.

what does that mean? a shortblock? does that basically mean a new motor... or what?

1st of all, where do you live????? some guys on here may live near you & might know a good mechanic to take it to :nice:

2nd, a short block is the lower half of the engine. baisically a engine minus the heads, intake, & all the accessories (powersteering, water pump etc....). it's the block, pistons, rods, crank, etc......... & nothing more. just a pre- assembled rotating assembly :nice:

How long ago did you buy it and from where did you buy it? Because if should have some sort of warranty. I bought my car used, and I made sure I got the 6 month warranty which covers everything. So hopefully, my engine will blow soon and they can put a brand new one in :D

Seriously though, I'd try to shaft this problem with the dealer, or get the lemon law to cover you. Then get rid of the car and find a decent stock GT that wasn't beat on. Supercharge it yourself that way you know what the engine has been through. But I wouldn't drop a dime on that problem.

i live in moorpark california, that would be southern california... i bought the car about a month ago private party, just weeks after i bought i started having problems with it... replaced fuel pump/ filter and did some upgrades (tires, shifter, Stock MAF changed to LMAF, and put a power pipe in) dumped about 1500.00 into it to make it perfect and 1 week later i get nailed with this crap.

lemon law doesnt protect private parties

any other ideas ? where can i get the stock shortblock to replace mine?

the kit the guy at Modular Mustang Racing ( www.modularmustangracing.com)wants me to buy will consist of

MMR 4.6 Street Mod 700 $2499.00
*New Cast Iron 2003-04 Cobra Block (Romeo)
*New 4340 Forged 3.543 stroke Cobra Crankshaft w/micro polished journals at no extra charge
*New 4340 Forged 5.933 H-beam Rods
*New Forged pistons 3.552 Bore size (High or Low compression)
*Speed Pro file fit rings (precision file fit to your application, nitrous, blower, turbo or N/A)
*Speed Pro/Federal Mogul Rod and Main bearings
*Complete Pro Assembly and Balancing for the smoothest, highest revving shortblock available.

$300.00 to pull my engine out
$600.00 to put old engine parts on new shortblock
$300.00 to put the new motor back
$200.00 for something else i cant remember he said

with tax and everything that totals

$4080.18 <--- :owned:

my other option is to try and sell it (basically screw someone else) and hope to god the SES light doesnt come on in the test drive... even though it does come on every 15 minutes or so, so i dunno how im going to sell it.

any other ideas?

dss, & coast high performance make some really good short blocks :nice:

there are also some very good, reputable vendors that cruise the boards as well, i.e. - cobra killer (www.modularfordpowerhouse.com), & vt engines (www.vtengines.com) both are great & you couldn't go wrong with either, with their exceptional customer service & products as well :nice:

oh & don't sell it, just fix it, make it better & enjoy it. what everyone is telling you to do with the forged engine & such is a good idea. but a completely forged engine isn't the answer for your problem, i'm sure the the actual fix is much cheaper. ALTHOUGH, a forged engine would serve you well, as it would any blown application, & you could also start making a good bit more & safer power with the forging as well :nice:
