There is 2 of them on each side of the block, on the lower end parts. I dont know what they are call but they are like a sleve to hold the headgasket in place while putting the head on. Mine is missing one and I think that might be why the headgasket was leaking when the previous owner installed the heads, he couldnt get it lined up right.
thanks for replys

You're not talking about the dowel pins are you? Those are for locazting the head to the top of the block. If you motor was assembled with one missing thats a bad thing.

You should be able to get some from the local engine shop.

if you're using all studs instead of bolts then you should be OK not using 1 dowel..for anybody interested i have 4 new dowels for a 351w leftover. I think they'll work with a 302 since they fit in the 302 heads

Doesn't make a difference whether you use studs or bolts.

The bolts don't locate the head in the exact place it needs to be.

The purpose of the bolts is to clamp the head down to the block.

The purpose of the dowels, is to locate the head. It's what a machinist would could, a locational transition fit. Don't skimp out on the dowels.

Good chance its what caused head gasket problems.
