Slow, But Determined

Hello gents! Bought a '94 GT last Dec. after an accident that totaled my other car. Blue, black top. I want to do a some to it, but as I am a little bit of a novice I don't want to upgrade out of my knowledge base. The stock gears are 3:11s I believe, which are terrible. Would like to go to 3:55 or 3:73, not sure which.The paint is dying. So I want to reshoot it and looking to airbrush a mustang formed from blue true fire flames, Mike Levelle style, on the hood soon. I have had, and still have, enough trouble just keeping it on the road, so it has slowed down any mods. Will post info and pics as I go.

There is a lot of good info and how to's on this site,as well as a lot of helpful people on here when you start doing some mods..
Add some pics, give the complete details on your car. And people will start showing up with questions,suggestions and ideas.

Honestly, your current gear set is probably 2.73:1. I owned a '94 GT a while back that had those. Great highway gears, though. My '95 Cobra came from the factory with 3.08s. Check your differential cover tag if it's still there. It should list the ratio that is installed.

Now that you say that, I do remember those numbers. As I mentioned, I am new to the sport car/mod world, lol. Either way, I don't like the 2:73s, lol. My Mazda 626 had more punch off the line that the Mustang has. I will check for the tag. I had an 86 IROC before the service, and it had 3:55s. I liked the way it drove. Was told that I would like the 3:73 over the 3:55s in the Mustang, based on that. Opinions? Love the avatar by the way!

You would like the 3.73s. I have them in my '95 now and they're a great gear. I would say it's the upper limit for a street-driven Mustang that sees a lot of highway use.

With a 5-spd, I'd go 3.55's, especially on a car you drive a lot of highway miles with.


As you can see...everyone's gonna have a different opinion.

to me 3.55 is the perfect gear for most sticks. AOD's need a lower gear like a 3.73 or 4.10

raggity old 89 gt 5 spd with gt 40 tubular intake 70mm tb c&l tube with bigger mass air long tubes 19 pounders and 355s fun to drive. Gonna put my gt40p heads on it and probably my e cam but I gotta figuare out why it whisles like a stuck blow off valve first! Think about what your gonna do with it and that will suggest what gears your gonna need. Good luck.

All, right! I was willing to go either way. 3.73 sounds good to me. Thanks again guys. I have a grease monkey friend, but it is good to talk to car specific guys. I do appreciate the info.
