Looks like those Ford engineers running around in their V10 Mustang weren't telling us the whole story.

Looks like there's a little more to the Mustang V10 engine than they've been letting on: :nice:

From one of the Project Daisy press releases: :hail2:

In an atmosphere that is part think-tank and part speed-shop, the Advanced Powertrain team develops technologies that frequently have as many applications on the race track as in consumer vehicles.

For approximately two years, they had been working on an all-aluminum V-10 targeted at ultimate, naturally aspirated performance. When they bolted this beast into a Mustang chassis for evaluation, it only took one drive to confirm its potential.

"The Ford Shelby Cobra concept just begged for this engine," said Graham Hoare, director, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. "Although it’s not yet ready for production, we’ve reached a credible engineering level for such a serious concept car – and it has a modern soul that matches the famous 427."

Blending the Advanced Powertrain team’s work with elements from the 4.6-liter, 4-valve V-8 used in the 2004 Mustang Mach 1, the resultant Ford Shelby Cobra concept engine has 10 cylinders and is bored and stroked for a 6.4-liter displacement, or about 390 cubic inches. It produces 605 horsepower at 6,750 rpm and 501 foot-pounds of torque at 5,500 rpm without supercharging or turbocharging.

"In many ways, it’s not very exotic," said Hoare. "It uses the same basic castings and assembly techniques as our production modular engine family. The output, though, is phenomenal. If you can’t get in trouble with this kind of power, you’re not trying hard enough."

Kevin Byrd, the V-10 project leader, thinks of the Cobra V-10 as an all-star combination of current Ford engine technologies. "This engine is an amalgam of everything right about Ford engines. We took the best that the modular engine family has to offer, then added some tricks of our own. The V-10 is a culmination of 100 years of building engines," he said.

Wow now you know my age as well as all the design specs on the new mustang? And yet you seem to be ignoring the facts. Like all the magazines state the V-10 was special castings and one-off pieces. So no developement had been done. But I shall quote from mm&ff mag. "A special block was cut and pasted together and then the aluminum block was cast and machined." Like the block the heads were formed using casts that were cut and pasted" Toppping the V-10 is a hand built aluminum intake". It also has a billet crank. And considering all the parts needed like 2 mafsand 2 EEC V processors, vortech rails and paxton fuel pump all add price.
This info kinda makes your post on only the block being a special casting ignorant.

It is not the truck engine so comparing it to the truck engine price is ludacris.I believe it has also been posted elsewhere they have broken 7 clutches. So that would also need some design work. And where did you get dimensions on the new mustang engine bay. They just unveiled the production model. As for crashes. In nearly any wreck someone has a chance to walk away. I've seen plenty of accidents where someone got lucky and walked away when they should have been killed. Citing 1 accident as proof is again ignorant. And other than cite the mustang 2 you did nothing to dispute sondesign's statements. But please since you can predict my age enlighten me.

No my friend as the post following yours prove. Your blind and ignorant to the complete process of building cars. You don't shut down the line to run off 100 prototypes when you are just doing a feasibility study. One is all you need. Furthermore as I stated earlier the components are shared. A new block casting big deal (same tooling). A crankshaft thats a destroked version of the truck V10 etc etc. Wake up. Not everything on the prototype will make to production (computers etc.). Prototypes are made to help the bean counters descide the direction the company should take. That guy finally put the nail in your coffin. He confirmed what I was saying about the ease at which the motor could be produced. We don't need it bored and stroked to death that will take away some of the shared components. And if the people want the V10 more than a blown V8 then they should get it done period. And a car with as large a crumple zone as the mustang should be no problem with the crash tests. They don't add any bracing for different motors in the same car. (name one) The Australian Falcon comes with a 5.4 V8 and an inline six. The mustang has alot more room between the motor and the front bumper than a Falcon. These kids these days. Before you know it you'll be telling me that the IRS will make you 10mph faster in the slalom. Grow up already the point is mute. People would rather have a V10 then you get to put the blower of your choice on it. If your brain can keep from exploding from all that power.

Hey SVTDriver. Do you want salt or pepper on that hat. And no I don't know your age but I know your generation. To busy saying it can't be done and in that time you should have been finished.

Ok so what generation am I? I think you are the one being ignorant. By making assumptions about someone else. The new shelby cobra is not a mustang. The mustang still needs the safety requirements addressed. If it will pass or not is not the problem. It is if Ford wants to spend the money or not. You may be right it may pass with flying colors. But it may not.

Has no one caught on to what is going on yet here? Shelby is not going to be tuning ANYTHING. He sold the rights to his name so for could build this:

Ford has been testing the V10 (Destroked 427 to 390 (6.4L) for more revs) using the fox4 chassis (recent article in some mustang mag I read- it was rated at aroung 437hp). They were dropping the hammer at 7000rpm and getting sub-2sec 60ft times!

cobraconcept-29.jpg

The new Cobra concept is rated at over 600 hp (SAME 6.4L). The rumor is a 500hp Shelby Mustang is in the works- the new "GT" logo looks VERY similar to the old Shelby "CS" logo. My hunch is that the decision has already been made to build a V10 "Shelby GT 500" - for 500hp right along with a NEW SHELBY COBRA!!!! The only v8 we'll see in "Mustang Cobra" may be a s/c mod engine ala '05 Mustang Concept in a "GT350".

Look at the Mustang Concept and the new Cobra concept, and you will see common design DNA.

by the way bigblock. It would also seem that this is going into a slightly more expensive car than a mustang would be.

Here is the part I caught.
and points to the authenticity that comes from working with Carroll Shelby once again.
