Anyone help me out with wiring. I have the painless 12 circuit race harness. Also; msd 6al ignition, ss coil, dist., meziere water pump, two spal fans, thermostat relay. These all have different wiring diagrams, what do I do??? Any help would be appreciated.

Just tackle them 1 at a time. First decide "where" you want to install each component, and then wire them in. Wire in the Painless harness first. The MSD stuff is simple. The coil and distrib attach to the harness from the 6al box. The box itself only has a few wires to connect then (IIRC 1 to bat power, 1 to ground, 1 ign hot trigger). I would run the fans and pump off of relays and use 1 terminal from the painless fuse box to trigger them.

you lost me at the relays. I would like switch to beable to control the fans also. Hey, wanna help me out.. I'll buy lunch.

Help you out??? I don't even have the time to finish putting my stang together
:( :( :(
In all reality I would love to help (I am especially good at wiring) but time is just not my friend. I am more than willing to give you advice and answer any questions. Heck, if you want me to sketch up some diagrams of how I would wire the fans, pump, etc I would be happy to. I'll even tell you where in OC to get any of the wiring components I recommend. It's really not all that hard

Do you think it wise to run the 6AL box off of a relay? I am planning on having a ditribution block or terminal screwed into the side of my engine compartment. From there I'll have at least 4 and likely 5 relays as shown in the following diagram. I want the electric fan and the electric water pump to have power regardless of the ingition condition, headlights too I guess.

GP, what do you think of this arrangement? I want the fusible links on everything but the starter motor (one with "permanent magnet") and battery itself for safety. Also, does anyone know of a good source for quality relays that don;t cost an arm and a leg?

Here's what I have drawn:

That term "purple #919" refers to one of the wires in my 18 circuit kit from painless-performance.

The MSD box has a built in relay. That is why you have 1 wire to bat power and 1 to ignition hot (to trigger the relay). Are you sure you want the fan & electric water pump to "always" have power? That could put a drain on the battery. For example, say you make a short trip on a hot day (or a run down the strip). After you shut down the motor the fans and pump will continue to operate until the temp hits the shutoff(I am assuming they are on a thermostatic relay). Fans and pumps usually draw alot of amps. I would have their relays triggered by the ignition. You could always put an override switch on them to trigger them when the ignition is off. That way you can control the amount of damage they may do. IF you don't run it this way get a battery with a DEEP cycle :D
Fusible links!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :nice: You are one of the few people I've ever seen smart enough to do this. Most people don't believe me when I try to sell them on the fusible links. I have fusible links on everything that draws power, even on my relays. Just make sure you use the right gauge fusible link for the gauge of wire you are protecting.
The only thing you may want to consider doing different is running the isolated terminal between the alternator and the solenoid terminal.

Alt --------> Isolated Terminal -----------> Solenoid

This will allow your accessories to draw power without going "through" the battery, while at the same time allowing your battery to charge.

I just finished installing the painless 18 circuit in my 65 with a similar arrangement (MSD, XR-700, spal fan, electric fuel pump, etc). The biggest trick is where you mount the fuse block.
My kit incluses the trunk-mounted fuse block. I am going to bolt it to a sheet of diamond plate along with the ignition solenoid.

I am still somewhat overwhelmed byt the nest of spaghetti under my dash. I'm trying to not think about that section, instead focusing on the front clip and the trunk :D
