Best Air Filter/Intake Setup on O3 Cobra?

I just got my new Torch Red 10th Anniv. 2003 Cobra and I'm wanting to put in a different air filter. I had a 2000 GT that I had a lots of mods done to, but I want to keep this Cobra pretty stock for both warranty and personal reasons. I'm thinking of putting in a K&N and was wondering if there is a better setup. Has anyone taken off the air silencer off there airbox like a lot of the GT guys do? I'm looking for a few power gains but not expecting too much. I've heard though that supercharged engines respond well to mods. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like all you need is a K&N drop in filter. The better set up would be a complete CAI though. K&N sells an FIPK unit for the 03/04 Cobra ($169) that provides very good gains. If you do decide to use the stock airbox, leave the snorkle on there. I've actually heard of folks losing power when they remove it.

Ford gave me $3000 in Rebates and I also got 3.9% financing. The Car was also sold at invoice price on top of that. They tried selling me a vert for that same price as a coupe just to get rid of it. I was pretty happy with all the deals I got.

Man lance! I think you did better than I did! Whats up Fellas...Just purchased the exact same car as Lance 7days ago...I cant complain, I walked out with a full LoJack, TT&L for a little under 34K. Love the car...appreciate all the info you guys share!

The JDM (13" is it?) cone seems to make the best power. Installation takes 10 minutes and can be put back to stock anytime.I wouldn't bother with a drop in, or a through the fender CAI.

You gotta do a 2.8 upper pulley on that thing!
It would be a sin not to!
It can be done in a manner that does not show when you replace the stock pulley.

My friend has a "stock" 03 with a chip and air filter and it feels SO SLOW now....I'll never go back =o)

I just put the steeda kit in my car and love it, looks good and I swear I must have picked up 30hp....as for the upper pulley, I dont advise it. Replace the lower with a Metco. If you change the upper your just asking for belt slippage....I bought the Metco lower and a second idler arm to really squeeze the belt around the pulley.

....

I just have the drop in K+N but I removed my silencer snorkel...what ever you call it.. The piece that goes into the fender.. I have never tried with it back in....but I have noticed that when I removed my headlight I gain 1 1/2 - 2 mph every time....

I'm tempted to buy the K+N system, but Im afraid to mess with my car cause its running real nice....too fast actually... :flag:

I also did the Steeda kit and the results are great. No dyno pulls yet.

Milkowich...get the long cone and you should hit 120 more consistently.

Raw Lifter....I've tested the lower pulley. It just plain sucks compared to the 2.8 upper.
I have a 2.8 upper (JDM) with 100mm tensioners to replace the stock 90's and a gates belt. This has been on the car since early December without a hint of belt slippage.
I cleaned all under my hood Saturday and there isn't ANY belt powder anywhere.
I don't understand why everyone is having all of these slippage problems.....
other than that steeda aftermarket tensioner...I don't like that thing.
It actually pulls the belt away from the upper pulley creating less surface area for the belt to touch. What goos is an aftermarket tensioner if it puts tension in the wrong place?
If you replace the 90 mm idlers with 100's and get the right belt you will have no slip.

As for the 6 LB lower....Jay at Lamotta had it for awhile. After some difficulty breaking 115-116 MPH in the 1//4 he put the stock lower back on and put on the 2.8 upper.
1st run....11.94@120
2nd run....11.79 @ 121
hmmmmmmmmmm......
Every car I've been in with a 6 LB lower is not as strong as the 2.8 upper cars.
The 2.8 also does not over speed any accessories!
Check out your 6 LB lower.....besides spinning the supercharger faster, what else does it spin faster?

slippage

I dont understand what the deal is with belt slippage.. i had someone look at my pulleys yesterday at the track and say I had it because of how my pulleys look. Can you tell from that? My dyno looked fine and I never notice any loss of power.

I did stall for the first time ever at the track yesterday....at the end of my run I popped it right into nuetral and the car died. the next two runs I kept meaning to shift into 5th and then brake, but I forgot and put it in nuetral and it reved real low but didnt stall...I dont think its the "Stall" problem people talk about, but it was disconcerning to stall at the end of my first run of the season....hard to brake too until i realized what happened!

also upsetting to spin the tires bad and run a 12.2 with a 2.0 60ft

backed that up though with two 11.7 runs with 1.75 6fts! at 119mph!

Bro, saying that the lower sucks compared to lower makes no sense whats so ever...6lbs of boost is 6 lbs of boost....I have been running blower cars for 6 years now and the bottom line is the smaller you go with the upper pulley the greater chance the belt is going to slip because there is less surface area. I might not be as concerned if it were a 10 or 12 rib set up but I have seen it all to often....the dyno graph proves it also. I did have second thoughts about installing the lower due to the fact that it would speed up the rest of my accessories......when I made the comment in the above post I forgot that these cars didn't have stepped pulleys so im trying to find info to see how much they are actually going to speed up my accessories.

Let me back up a minute again....they do have 2 piece pulleys, there is a pulley mounted in front of the accessory pulleys for the blower only.....so yes I will be getting the lower pulley and yes it's a much better way to go.

If you say so......

It's not like I tune these things or anything ;o)

A 2.8 upper won't slip if you have the correct tensioner/belt etup.
A 2.7 or smaller may (probably will) slip, or a 2.8 with a lower pulley in addition, but a 2.8 upper alone will not slip if done correctly.

All other things equal, 2.8 upper cars are regularly spanking 6 Lb lower cars.
Maybe this won't be as bad with the lower you are getting, since the belt only goes around it and the blower......but I'm an upper pulley man all the way.

If you want to talk Lightnings I'll preach a different tune...

The 2.8 produces 6+ lbs (as advertised) maybe thats why some with the 2.8 upper have an advantage over those with the 6lb lower....well Metco also makes a 8lb lower (what I have).....I'm not going to argue but, upper, lower pulley doesn't make a difference 6lbs of boost is 6lbs of boost.....I have been running and tuning my blower car for over 6 years now.....what i say comes from experience with my 1,300hp novi stroker....im new to the mod motors but not new to blower cars.....
