Hood scoops and side scoops ????

i dont get why so many of you are furious at the idea of non-functional scoops. so what if they dont serve a purpose... if people like the way they look, more power too them. i think its good that ford kept the body clean, so those who want the clean look will have it, while those who want external appearance mods can do so in the aftermarket. the legendary boss 428 had a non-functional scoop. the first mach1 had a non-functional scoop. some people like the look and some people dont.

Actually the 428 Cobra Jet Mach1 with the shaker hood scoop was funtional although the 351 Mach 1 scoop wasn't, so the origianl Mach 1 had the choice of either functional or non-functional depending on engine choice. And I am guessing you meant the Boss 429 which did have a functional scoop, there is no such thing as a Boss 428, the 428 and 429 are two totally different engine blocks and designs. As I said I have no problem with folks who like them I just don't like fake hood scoops personally, nor do many other mustang enthusiasts. So I'm glad Ford has left them off the new Mustang and the aftermarket can help anyone who wants them with I'm sure an eventual myriad of choices.

You guys who dont want scoops will just have to get an aftermarket scoops delete package. (and you'll look even dorkier doing so) :rlaugh:

Picture this scenario. You're standing around in a circle with a bunch of hardcore car guys. You've got your lovely Stang nearby, and all your buddies have their hot rods as well. A non-mustang guy points at a tacked-on piece of plastic on your hood and asks "Hey, cool scoop... how much power do you figure that gets you?"

Sheepishly, you are forced to answer "None. No air flows through there whatsoever. It's a phony scoop that's just for show."

Alternately, picture this scenario. You enter a car shop, and ask the gear-head behind the counter "Hey, I'll take one of those '05 Mustang scoop delete kits. I want to get rid of all the phony tack-on junk because it serves no purpose whatsoever and clutters up the clean lines of the car."

Alright everybody, raise your hand if you think the guy in the first scenario looks like the bigger dork.

That's what I thought.

Wow, when it comes to knowing heritage, this forum is slack... Yes, there was no Boss 428, you meant Boss 429, which DID have a functional scoop. It was manual however, a flapper actuated via a cable to a knob in the interior, next to the manual choke knob. Yes, the "first" Mach 1's had functional ram-air "shaker" scoops as an option, and GT5oh, that shaker option was available on ALL Mach 1 powertrains, i.e. you could order a shaker on a 351, 390 or 428 in 1969, not just the 428. The 351 & 390 shaker setups are much rarer than the 428's, however. Yes, the standard Mach 1 scoop was not functional for directing air, but, it did house turn-signal indicators in the back of it, so at least it was accomplishing SOME sort of purpose. Some more trivia for all you "gotta have scoops to be tough" kids. On the first Boss 302 in 1969, Larry Shinoda (the car's designer) HATED fake scoops, and eliminated the fake brake-vent scoops on the sides of the 1/4 panels. And there was NO hoodscoop, functional or non-functional, on 1969 Boss 302's. Upon eliminating all of the B.S. scoops, Shinoda added functional spoilers front and rear that helped reduce the amount of air traveling under the car, plant the nose a bit, and a deck spoiler to help fix the Mustang's light tail at high speeds. ALL FUNCTION, no fluff. In 1970, the shaker option was offered for the Boss, but the 1/4 panel scoops were permanently shelved.

hey guys, try this one. i have a 2003 GT, and you all know the "scoops" that one has. its got the big one on the hood, and the obscenly tall ones on the sides. well i was just wondering if a 1998 GT hood would fit on an 03 GT. pretty sure it would fit, but are the brakets the same? i know Ford changed some stuff in 1999, just not sure if it would effect the hood. i myself hate the fake scoop on the hood, and im gonna do away with the ones on the side with the bullitt kit for it. if anyone can help me that would be great!

If I were you I'd just get the 99-01 Cobra hood. (which is now the standard V-6 hood) Its a smooth hood with a small reverse facing scoop, yeah its fake, but its not even noticeable. IMO looks alot better than the hood your car has now. Plus it should be pretty cheap if your able to get one off of a V-6.

Bullitt side scoops would clean it up even more. :nice:

Thanks RICKS, what I wrote was just all I could rember off the top of my head about those models. I didn't realize the shaker could be had with the 351 or 390. I cant recall ever seeing one those cars, they must be worth a lot if some one has one. Nor did I know about the manual function of the Boss 429's scoop thats pretty interesting. I cant believe I left out the Boss 302 and its designer Larry Shinoda and his distaste for non functional scoops, didnt he also design the 67-68 Camaro before moving to Ford, another beautiful clean design with no clutter. Just goes to show that plenty of bench mark Mustangs looked great with no fake look at me scoops.

I believe the hood did change in 1999 too.

I am not trying to start a flame war but if you are that concerned with what others think of you and / or drive a Mustang to be "cool" then you have other issues. If you enjoy driving a Mustang and hanging around other car guys that is great, but why be concerned with looking like a dork?

As for the scoops or no scoops, it depends on the Mustang. Fake scoops have always been a part of the Mustang. Remember those big chome ones that were on '65s??? As it turns out, those chome scoops and the grille are what attracted me to buying my '65 coupe over a '66. I think those chome scoops help define the car, escpecially on raven black paint like mine. However, I really like the looks of no scoops also on a '65-'66 fastback. Without the scoops the lines flow really nice with the backend of the car.

As for the '03 with the really big scoops on the side and hood, I like it! The car is a fairly big car and has a more box look to it with really defined hard lines. I think that the scoops add to that look.

Finally, on the '05. I really liked the hood that was on the concept. I also liked the look with the scoops on the side, along scoops where the quarter windows are now. However, I am sure I will see some mustangs without the scoops that I absolutly love. It all really depends on the car, what has been done to it, and the color of the paint.

Finally, I am holding out for the '06 models. It will at least be a GT :nice: I am hoping that the flip around the lower valance opening like they did in the GT-R. I think it looks a lot better. Also, by '06 we should see some special editions out!

later,

Chris

I never really like the fake scoop on the 01+ GT's, you might as well tape a brick to the hood and sides of your car. Those scoops would seem to make the car less aerodynamic, the 99-00 Scoops never bothered me, I like the way that the accents look on the 05, the sides still look truly mustang, I would like to see an actual functional ram air hood on the 05. Maybe well see on the cobra.

for all of you scoop haters... i have a question.

do you regard rear window covers/louvres as pointless also? it is a mod solely for appearance, so do you think the louvres with minor scoops (i.e. gt-500) are on the same level as the nonfuctional side scoops/hood scoop?

I do. I'm not big on side window covers. I'm not a fan of rear window louvers either but they can be slightly functional. If done right, they can help reduce the amount of sunlight coming into the car, thereby helping to keep the passengers cool. I'd rather tint my rear glass though.

Check out the scoop poll. Being a proponent of "functional scoops or nothing", I'm pleased to see the current results, but I'm surprised it's not closer a closer race.

What chrome scoops are you talking about on the 65. All I have seen are chrome accents for the fake scoops. Unless you go to the shelby models. Just curious. I am wondering if I am missing something.

He is talking about the chrome quarter panel ornaments on the cheaper versions, I believe. Some people feel they look (I guess a little bit) like scoops. I ordered my early 65 Mustang without them ("Exterior accent group - delete chrome, add pin stripe and rocker panel molding" - $32 if I remember right), and removed them from my current 65 when I bought it in 67. I don't like fake scoops. So my cars have none. That's my taste, other folks have theirs.

That's what I thought. I guess I just can't see how they can be called scoops.

This very same arguement has come through here before.

"Did the early cars have scoops or not?"

In my view, they were not scoops, they were ornaments. This is what they were called by Ford. So that is what they are. It is simply a decoration to accentuate the sides of the car. Much as a hood ornament is to decorate the hood of a car.

The only Mustangs to have scoops until 1969 were Shelby models. (That I know of). The rest were ornaments.

Agreed. (And of course the "Shelby models" weren't Mustangs, they were Shelbys. As in "Shelby GT-350", never "Mustang GT-350")

That's why I feel they should NOT have scoops from the factory. You can always add them, it is not so easy to remove them.

I beg to differ the scoop(not ornaments) that is on the hood of my 1984 SVO Works very well to help cool the Air to Air intercooler.

But I do agree if you put scoops or spoilers on a vehicle they should be functional.

That seems to be the prevailing opinion. The scoop poll has stabilized at 32 votes. here's the results:

Keep it clean (no scoops)
3 votes - 9.38%

Only if it's functional. otherwise, clean is good. :D
18 votes - 56.25%

Desperately want functional scoops (clean is bad, fake is bad)
4 votes - 12.50%

"Functional" Shmunctional. Just give me scoops!
7 votes - 21.88%
