Stupid question that I should know

If I want my vehicle to accelerate faster then I would want higher or lower gear ratios in my tranny? Which would accelerate my vehicle faster, tranny "A" with 2.75/1.94/1.34/1.00/0.74 or tranny "B" with 3.91/2.24/1.49/1.00/0.80.

Tranny "B" under most circumstances. :nice:

You want it geared so as to put the engine into its power-band and pull through it effectively, in essence using the entire engine rpm power range effectively.

If you have a very broad power band and the gearing spins through the range too quickly you are wasting energy ... it builds torque so quickly that traction becomes an issue ... ie slower et's :notnice:
 
I am lost...I have 355's in the rear...tranny B will put me through my powerband too fast, thus causing me to shift early..So how is it better for me. I thought close gear ratios were better becuase you stay in your power band longer and when you shift you do not drop out the bottom of your power band.
Correct me if I am wrong on this one.

SB is right. low poop motors (imports) need close ratios. 1st and second gear in the stang cover the same range as 1-5th in my eclipse (per MPH achieved in said cogs) cuz the eclipse makes no power. driving it is like furiously running in sand.

it is different for everyone. for someone like TMoss, who has a fat torque curve like a washboard, he can have wider spaced ratios. someone like me (more peaky), i need them closer. youve gotten past the basic ratio theory, and now SB and others have adapted it into real world applications.
i think people would need some dyno curves to figure out what is best for the given application.
