Anyone who drives a stickshift is a dangerous idiot!!!

funny, i always thoguht driving a stick was better b/c with anything else i fall asleep... it's just too boring w/ an auto

the pic he uses as evidence is from wreckedexotics.com. i also like how he uses no actualy data or research just theory: "Although this research didn’t examine the role of the manual transmission"

:notnice:

Methinks the author is the type of person that can't walk and chew gum at the same time, and wouldn't if he could because it's dangerous... Don't wanna smack the twig and giggle berries on a fire hydrant or something...

where do these people come from? Who allows these people to funnel through our nations education system and come out the other side alive? When does having more control of your situation become more dangerous? To quote Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes "Sometimes I think the surest sign of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us..."

i fail to see how driving a manual is more dangerous than an automatic. Driving a manual is a second nature deal after a while. There is no careful thinking, its memorized movements. I feel the car when i know to shift. I dont need a tach or "auditory attention". some things should be kept to oneself.

they guy actually has a bunch of articles on similar topics, one of them even is a response to this article where he says that automatics are just as dangerous b/c dangerous driver will just find another distraction... so i think there are more articles in this series we didn't read...

article: Shifting Expectations

"My recent editorial “Death to the Stick Shift” questioned the safety of-- and slavish affection for-- manual transmissions. The main premise of my article was simple: it takes a higher level of driver attention to operate a manual transmission than an automatic.

This point was proven by my many critics, who argued that driving a stick shift prevents drivers from engaging in dangerous multi-tasking. This erstwhile advantage simply reinforces the assertion that a manual demands greater concentration (however subconscious). By the same token, it’s disingenuous to assert that an automatic transmission is inherently dangerous because it allows drivers to talk on their cell, eat, drink or otherwise distract themselves. Inattentive drivers are a hazard, no matter what kind of car they drive."

Interesting and even more confusing. Comes off like a guy that likes the sound of his own voice, and likes answering questions no-one has asked.

It's interesting that in this guy's passion to state his conclusion that manual transmissions are dangerous and inferior, he utterly fails to support that conclusion with significant, interesting, nor even mildly amusing arguments. Not to mention the total lack of relevant facts. Anecdotes are fun, but there is a reason that real engineers and technically adept professionals alike don't rest their work on them. They are meaningless. As is this author, and his submission to that web site.

It's nice to see that someone else at his site diametrically disagrees, describing in an article that manual transmissions may, in fact, be superior. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/editorials/1102009258/

Of course, the underlying truth seems undeniably clear. The choice between manuals and automatics is one of preference. Discussions about the relative efficiency, performance and safety surely could be amusing and interesting. But Mr. Bob Elton fails on all of those counts. Let's just hope for his sake that he quickly learn how to think, and how to write. Then maybe he can make a useful contribution to society. Or maybe the best hope for Mr. Elton is that he ensure he has other means of supporting himself.

thats just stupid. i don't think he has ever driven a car in his life whether it be manual or automatic. he basically says the EPA, THE FREAKIN EPA!, is lying and distorting mileage numbers for auto/manual cars.

Only part of the article i can agree with would be....

"driver distraction is a real bitc*"
