they are wider... how much... hmm a few inches

thanks... anyone know exactly how much wider? I'm thinking about getting one, having the tubes welded and putting all my new stuff in it and just swapping it with the stock one in my 98. I want it to be about an 1 1/2 to maybe 2 inches wider to kick the rear tires out a little more. :)

I've read that the 99 and newer rearend housings are a little wider than the 98 and older? how much wider are they ? just curious :)

I was told a while ago that they are 1.5" wider on each side, for a total of 3" wider. This is from Stangman393. Jeff knows his Mustangs and has measured a lot of parts. I haven't had a chance to measure but you may be able to tell by the track width of the 98's vs. 99's.

so do you just want to fill out the wheel wells? then just go get a set of 10.5's to put out back!!! peace

john :p

I think he just saw one of those old Pontiac commercials,, Remember "WIDER IS BETTER". I have to agree tho, 10.5" rims would probably look better hook better and cost less than a rear end swap

They are 1.5" wider per side for a total of 3" wider than the drum brake rear but only 3/4" wider per side for a total of 1 1/2" wider than the 94-98 disc brake rears.

Don't bother wasting your money on something like that. Wider tires and spacers will do 'ya well.

It's getting spacers... I allready have the wide tires and wheels. I just want a little bit more backspacing to kick em out a little more. Thanks for the replies everyone... I'll keep them in mind if I need to build another rearend.

A wider rear track will screw up your handling (all else the same).

There is a reason the rear track is narrower than the front track from the factory. Get some books and a calculator to figure it all out.

Beyond being wider, the 99+ cars use larger bolts to mount the control arms.

I swapped a 98 Rear axle into a 00 a couple years ago, very straightforward and easy bolt on. If you're willing to waste a whole day doing it that is. The bolt sizes are different, just use your existing control arms and bushings with the new housing, everything fits e-z. :nice:
I did my swap to switch out a 7.5 with an 8.8. I think doing it only to make your tires stick out the fenders is a little crunch on the wallet. The spacer idea is a much better approach imho. Besides, there are enough Stangs on the streets looking like they were assembled south of the border. Do you want to join in on the Mexi-Stang bandwagon? Lowrider GT? Please don't put in blinging 100 spoke rims!

the rearends are only slightly wider ... it wouldnt cost very much because I allready have to rebuild my rearend, so I have everything but the housing... my wheels wouldnt stick out of the fender.. they'd actually be even with it. :) but I plan on road racing this thing, so I'm just going to use spacers.. .that way if it rubs, I can take them off or decide if I want to do some body modifications instead of swapping rearends.
