For Drag racing
if you are N/A the best would be 4.30s with 4:10s in a close second

Most people with power adders run a 3.73 gear even though I have seen a few run 4.10s
agreed.

It will depend heavily on your setup though, and will the ONLY be used for drag racing or will it be used on the street too? And is this auto or manual?

KB recommend 3.73 with the manual box because with 4.10's you run the risk of spinning the blower to fast which may cause damage to it.

That is a good question and depends on a lot of factors, like what mods have you done, cam change, heads, what does the engine rev, when does it stop pulling, what transmission ratios do you have, what height rear tires are you running, etc. Most will say if you are close to stock, maybe exhaust, intake, tuner then 4.30's or 4.10's depending on your tire height and rpm limit. If you could get an idea of how many rpm's you need to be turning at the finish line then gear towards that. Ideally you want to be using all your useable power from the engine as close to the finish line as possible.

:stupid: there are so many factors too consider.

well what you would do for a race car is try to have it set where you are coming through the traps in you 1:1 gear at your peak rpm. not nessesarly realine but peak power producing rpm.

The factor is trap speed basically. if you run out of gear you will have to shift into overdrive. If you are not all the way to the end of you powerband you are proably leaving ET on the table.

For a stockGTit is probaly 4.30's as I think you would hit the rev limiter in 1:1 with 4.56's. Now a cobra could proably run 4.56's just fine because of its higher redline.

once you start moding you kind of have to play with it. you can also play with your rear tire size as well. if you put in 4.30's and started running out gear you could run a larger tire in the rear if you did not want to change your gears.

it is all about rpm's to make a short story long.

my advice would be to mod the car. go run it. take a look at your trap speed. then start doing some math. there are tones of calcutators on the web where you can enter you tire size, gear ratio, and it will spit out MPHvsRPM.

higher gear ratio's wont help you much if you dont have good tires to get the torque to the ground. I've seen a lot of people who have gotten worse track time off 4.10's because they are running crappy tires. to get the real gains out of gears you need dr's or slicks.

traction is a separate issue to gearing. If you like drag racing you will have good tires and suspention before long.

well im playing for this summer at least to have headers, cams, intake, chip, gears n possibly lighter driveshafts
ne 1 kno a rough estimate of what my 1/4 mile times would look like with a 2002 Mustang GT manual with those mods

it would be between 4.10's and 4.30's no doubt. that package gets you knowwhere near the power to run 3.73.

now pick you rear tire size and cam and intake and you should know what you new usable power band will be to decide between the 4:10 and 4:30

if you keep you stock limiter settign of 6050 I would go 4:10's. If you up it to 6500 I would go 4.30's. just my opinion though. 4.30's with stock tire diameter and 6000rpm redline giver you 107mph. I think you would want a little more margine. now you up the limiter 6500 and you would have to trap 115 to hit it.

higher gear ratios help, if you know how to drive. Traction on street tires is all about finesse
