Here we go again---GTO vs. GT

  • Sponsors (?)

Well,

No one's eluded to the fact that you already have a Mustang that'll smoke both of them, so if you want something different, the GTO would be the way to go.

BUT....I for one, think that with the motor aside, the GTO can't compare at all with the Mustang.

It's really pretty sad when an archaic solid axle, mid $20K car can outhandle a $30K "sport coupe" with an IRS.

Take the Mustang GT 'vert. That's something you DON'T have yet, in fact you've never owned a convertible, and I can tell you from my past and present experience, on a beautiful night, right around dusk, drop the top and the horsepower difference won't matter one freaking bit, neither will the stereo, just a pair of nice throaty mufflers is all you'll need.

I dont see the dilema.? They are 2 different classes of cars. Which class are you in the market for?

If you need a midsize car with some git up, the GTO hands down.
If you want a sports coupe, the GT.

I bought the GT just because of the styling so reminiscant of the early Mustangs plain and simple. While the Mustang between 1973 and 2004 are nice cars, the body style didnt talk to me. The 2005 screamed out, here I am, the one you always wanted. I suspect if the GTO had that same thing, GM wouldnt be able to produce them fast enough.
If the only engine availabe GT was say the 203 hp V6 like the 500 has, I still would have bought it. That it had a 300 hp v8 was just a bonus. I have a couple other vehicles if I am going to have a need for the back seat.

In my opinion, the majority of the American made body styles are plain.(here that Ford and GM?)
I like the Vettes ( not particularly the newest one) and the Ford GT, both way too much $$$$.

Anyway back to your question, what do you need/want in the 2 cars. It should be easy from there.

The Mustang GT is gorgeous and simple mods only make it even more gorgeous... At the end of the day, I like to be running a sweet looking ride that I can have some fun with... The GTO is a fine car for the money, but why pay more to be in a car that doesnt look better? You have the power as you already said (600HP Mustang), what else did the GTO have going for it that is hands down better?

Its like this, do you want a gorgeous girlfriend who has sex like a **** star, or a really really fat chick with a beard and a wooden leg who has sex like a raging maniac?

That's what I thought. Buy the GT. Unless you're a chubby chaser, then get the GTO.

undecided

Hey guys. Now I'm stuck. I've been shopping around for a new car too but since my dad and I work at a ford dealership I got hooked up with an 06 GT for pretty cheap. Now I see this GTO discussion and am torn. I hated the 04 GTO but the new one is growin on me. I basically know what everyone is going to say and could just look at the replys already on here but I'm still undecided. That employee discount is basically the same thing I can get with ford. I'm a huge Ford fan but the 400hp is appealing. Plus I'm getting tired of seeing mustangs EVERYWHERE. The new ones aren't there yet but they're gonna be all over soon enough. I know if I get my black 06 GT I'll pull up to the light and be right next to two other 06 or 05 GTs and four or five earlier model mustangs behind us. Here in New Mexico mustangs are cheap and everywhere. Everyone and their mom has a mustang because they have a cheap V6 model. I've seen one GTO in the past year. (or maybe more because they don't stand out as much).

As side issue, but still relavant I guess.

If you live in America and want a newish performance car is this it. GT or GTO?

To be honest if I was looking for a new car I would also consider some newish 2nd models, as this then leaves a great diversity of choice. Can easily come up with 10+ different performance cars all for around the 30k mark or less available in the UK.

Tommy what you need to do is update your freakin' sig!

I still say Mustang. Having two hardtop coupes ( three if you include the Thunderbird ) is rediculous.

Go for the 'vert!

BTW- I'm assuming you and Carter spoke?

Yeah, I spoke with him---I'll call you about what we talked about.

I know I need to update my sig...maybe I'll wait until I get the new car and add the G35 as well---take off the SVTF, and add the Thunderbird.

Don't sweat the small stuff now though---I'm about to toss out $30!! :D

Price update: $29,700 for a GTO M6 or $31,485 for a GT M5 'vert.

Just like the commercial says, I'm torn, "like an old sweater..." :D

Are you really having trouble?....... a 05 GTO for under 30K vs a regular mustang over 30K?

Seriously buy the GTO :nice:

Part of the problem is that I know in a few months it'll be the dead of winter and BOTH cars will be alot cheaper.

Therefore, the way I see it the price will be just about the same soon enough.

Listen to what your saying........... the SAME price.

The mustang is the CHEAPER car and the quality/features/performance differences between the two would normally transulate into a 8-10K difference in price. Right now the GTO is significantly undervalued while the mustang is significantly over valued.

After 4 months with the mustang I have to say I absolutely love this car, but in retrospect I wish I considered the GTO more before I bought the GT.
While the Stang is no slug by any means, the GTO is a more powerful car stock (obviously) and thats a big consideration for me, also being 6'3" 280lbs the GTO would've been better in that respect. (Altho I am quite comfortable in the Mustang).
Alot of people say the GTO is ugly etc etc...but I really like the styling, It is definately understated but that makes it a nice sleeper.......and the sound from the factory is awesome. I guess theres alot of things I do like about the GTO better than my mustang, but I have no regrets...I love my stang and right now if I could trade it straight up for a GTO with similar mileage I would think about it for about 30 seconds and say nahhh..... :nice:

I must be missing something when people keep saying that the GTO (345-360 RWHP stock) is only slightly quicker than the new GT (260 RWHP stock) but if a three second gap or 10 car lengths to 130 MPH is only slightly faster, then an 03/04 Cobra is only slightly faster than my 01 modded GT...Looks aside (subjective and the 05 GTO is not that bad looking) even a GT with a CAI and tune will not beat an 05 GTO. Besides, all things being equal now with little of no variation in price between the two now, you take an 05 GTO and allow for the very same mods that a new GT owner may do (intake, exhaust, headers, TB and tune) and you are looking at only maybe 315RWHP for a GT and close to 380 to 390 RWHP for a 05 GTO and an easy 12 second car on factory tires. I say that is more than slightly quicker....
