Ford Ignition Switch Recall ..........

I bought my 93 stang as a second owner in 94, and while I did receive the recall card about 10 years ago, I never had the ignition switch replaced. To update those people, I believe the ignition switch has a slight constant draw thereby causing the plastic to melt onto the carpet and subsequently causing a vehicle fire. I never brought it into the dealer because I didn't have much luck with the ford mechanics at that point in time. Since that time, I run a battery cut off switch and disconnect the battery when I am not using the car. How many people have replaced the switch, can I get the parts to do it myself, and how much of a PITA is it to fix? Thanks in advance.

I've done mine twice. I think the switch is around $10-15 at autozone, or you may prefer to go to the dealer. All it involves is removing the column cover, remove the screws and unplug the connector. Installation is reverse of removal Really man it's easy....maybe 10 min. The first one I replaced a few years ago and it recently went bad and my turn signals wouldn't work Replaced it and

What piece needs to be replaced? Is it the "ignition switch wiring" - in other words what part do I ask for at the dealership? Thanks

your gunna need a special kind of torqs bit to take it off too. if im not mistaken. on my 86, thats how it was fastened on there. if you tell them the ignition wiring switch they will know what your talking about and if not just tell them where its located. if they still cant figure it out then go to another dealership.

ever try to get a 65mm throttle bodie gasket from the dealership??? talk about special ordering parts!!

i replaced mine last summer.you'll need either a t-25 t-27 torx tamper proof bit.i got my switch from ford for $15.if your wiring is melted then you need to fix the wiring also,not just replace the switch.

and if the wiring is bad, it seems to me that some of the resto houses sell a kit which has new wiring too.

It's still a free fix if you bring it into a dealer, takes about 30 minutes when I've had it done.

There is a FREE recall on Ford ignition switches. They overheat and sometimes catch fire.

Copy down you VIN number and call the Ford dealer nearest you. Tell them you want to see if the ignition switch recall for Fords & Mustangs was done on your car. They will ask for the VIN number & check it against the master database. If it isn't in the datbase, then you can schedule an appointment to have the switch replaced for free. The TSB is #95S28, and don't let them tell you that they don't do that anymore...

I never got a post card noticing me of the recall, but maybe it dont cover 87's!!
I did get and sent back a class action against Ford for that TFI module that fails and leaves drivers in the middle of the highway dead in the water Punn intended. I will probably get $20 and the lawyers about 20 Millionl

I took mine off with vice grips because I didn't have that funky torx bit. Easy breezy!

i have an 89 vert that i bought in march. im the second owner. i took it in to ford to have a window motor and a water pump replaced. while i was in there they told me that the car had not had this fixed. so they fixed it for free and so far it works fine and its been 8 months. i know exactly what u mean with ford though, their mechanics suck and their prices are through the roof. after all that i will never go back. good luck.

Yeah, I'm sure that some good ford mechanics exist, probably on here. Unfortunately, I just haven't met them yet. I know any dealership I take my car too will have me leave it. Then I will worry about some guy trying to see how high he can get my boost guage to read. I would just rather do it myself if it's only a $15 fix. Thanks everyone.

I called up the Ford dealership around here (on SR 50 JC) and they tried to feed me the BS about the car being too old, etc. I told the lady that answered the phone that it was my understanding that it didnt matter how old the car was. She said she'd check on it and get back to me. I got a 92. They still have to fix that?

If the recall has not been done on your car, than it will show up in the data base as needing to be done. If the recall has been done, than, when the vin # is entered in the database, nothing will show (hence it being to old) up. The data base will retrieve vehicle info up to 10 years back, ie: a 1995 or a 1996, that would likely be why the dealership said it was to old. I just did this recall on a 89 mustang yesterday. I checked the database and it was there.
