Some T56 questions.......GET IN HERE

here is how i rationalized it when i was going through my tranny debate(i got the T56).

first off the torque rating is around 500lb-ft. above what a stock block is gonna handle.

secondly i was swayed with the slightly lower 6th gear, and the 5th gear that can be used for racing--i like to go fast.

the way i look at it is if you have a dart block combo in mind and MUST have a manual then the tko 600 or viper spec T56 is in your future, if you have a stock block then the T56 will take damn near anything you throw at it.

as for the install it would be helpful to know if you have subframe connectors. if you do then you will have to cut the brackets that you get and weld them to the body.

if you don't then you can bolt them to the frame. either way you will most likely have to cut the rear crossmember attachment to make room for the supplied tranny crossmember brackets.

i am installing full length subs on wednesday and have to do the cut and weld, i will have pics the following tuesday night of how i did it--its not that hard.

other little things that have to be done are enlarging the spacer plate hole for the clutch cable, and rerouting the wiring harness(no modification was needed). i was unable to use a 3 piece mac x-pipe, but since put a summit h-pipe on it that fit good. wednesday i am gonna try a bbk x-pipe to see if that fits(i like my x-pipes).

all in all it is pricey and is somewhat of a trial to install, but to me the benefit is worth it. i will never consider another tranny for my car--ever.

The t-56 that came in the 03 - 04 cobras are rated for 440ft lbs. The Viper Spec t-56 is rated for 650 ft lbs. So really you would only be gaining 50 ft lbs going with the viper t-56. I put in the Viper Spec this year, and the great thing about it is the .5 ratio final gear. I can cruise the highway at 75, and hardly spin 2000 rpm. I swaped from an auto to the T-56, and I needed the tranny, a new bellhousing, 26 tooth clutch disk, New crossmember, shorter driveshaft, and modify the wiring harness. There is other stuff I can't think of right now, but I got everything I needed for the swap (minus the clutch and flywheel) from D&D Performance. They were very helpful and knowledgeable. They list their kits, prices, and parts at http://www.ddperformance.com/

Hey Bimmertech, you will have to post how that X-pipe fits when you try it. I had a bassani X pipe, and I couldn't get that to work very good at all. I went with a BBK H pipe, and that barely fits and rattles on the crossmember a little bit at idle, so I am still looking for one that is going to fit better.

Hey Wi Stang, I have a flow tech o/r h-pipe that doesnt fit either. That brace gets in the way. I too need an exhaust that fits better, any ideas? Im thinking that if the H section was widened it would fit fine, could an exhaust shop just widen it for us or would the welding hurt the flow?
I dont know what to do?

I know I widened my BBK o/r H pipe a little bit, and it helped, but still is not quite where I would like it yet. I am not too sure how the flowtech pipe is set up, but the BBK comes apart in the middle of the H section. So I went and got a 2.5 I.D. to a 2.5 O.D. exhaust adapter. Then I went under the car and figured out how much wider I could make the H pipe and still get the Tail pipes to connect up. Then I trimmed the adapter to the size I wanted and slapped it in there. I didn't weld it in yet, I just used some clamps for the time being.
I wouldn't think it would affect the performance of it. I probably only widened it 1.5 - 2 inches. Unfortunately I think the only way to get it to truly fit the way I want it is to get something custom done.

I'm running a T-56 with BBK long tubes and a BBK x-pipe. It fit fine, the only problem I had was the way the x-pipe fit, because of the heads I was running. I ended up having to widen out the x-pipe about 1.5 inches wider because the collectors on the long tubes were moved up and out by the higher deck height of the AFR 185s.

I love my 6 speed and it seems to handle my blown stroked combo just fine.

how much did u guys spend, soup to nuts?
$3260

that is the T56 conversion from d&d with a fidanza flywheel, kc clutch, summit h-pipe--shipped.

yes the viper od is huge, but you have to take into account that the first 3 gears are super tall as well and require a huge rear gear--thus negating any gain by that .50

t5 has a .68 5th gear, the T56(non-viper spec) has a .62---doesn't seem like much but it makes a good difference. imo if you are buying it for the overdrive you are buying it for the wrong reason. i love 5th gear.

I probably have about $4600 into my swap including a spec stage 3+ clutch and flywheel. It cost me a little more since I was swapping from an auto to the manual, but it was well worth it. I went with the Viper spec t-56 initially just because it can handle alot of power, but the .50 overdirve is pretty sweet on the highway. I get good gas milage, and it gets the car out of the RPM range where my exhaust drones. I haven't second guessed my decision once.

What bellhousing is needed? What driveshaft? How much is the crossmember?

last time i checked 650-440= 210, not 50 :p

I just bought kit # K7, so I am not too sure on what the part numbers of the individual pieces are.
Unfortunately I don't see any parts breakout for the bellhousing and crossmember on the D&D website. The only part number I could find on there was for the Driveshaft.

PN D14 -- Ford/Viper 5.0/5.8 T56 into 94-95 Mustang -- 30T -- 3.5" -- $499

You will probably have to contact them for more info on the bellhousing and crossmember.
