Need to know REAR gearing...

Got my 460 and plan on N/A power.

It's getting backed by a C4 (not c6) <2.46, 1.46, 1.00>
Going with 28" Slicks at all times.
Plan on revving not much higher than 5k.
Going for Dove heads, big cam, Torker II intake.

So with a gutted HCI 460+C4 what gear should I use???

I was thinking 3.55 and MAX of 3.73

For what its worth, been there did what your doing many many years ago. Car will be a dog unless your looking for a 13 second ride. If so then its fine.

Just curious why you say that. because of the gearing, trans, power to weight of the BB or what?
cause hes building a very mild big block. I can tell by his questions and replies " A Big Cam " A torker intake? Between my own big blocks and people I have done them for (about 11 BB foxes), I can tell you first hand that unless you are making 500+ The big block is almost a waste, to me anyways. Compare a 400hp small block fox with a 400hp big block fox, same car and everything and the small block will make that big block look like a dog. He better have the D0VE heads worked, have someone that knows what there doing handle the cam and induction setup or its gonna end up an 800lb boat anchor over the front wheels. Hes gonna need to also do some suspension work to transfer that weight backwards. NOONE loves the big blocks more than me, but if its done hastily, they look foolish and further the trash talk from the chevy crowd. To each his own.

Heres my 557 goin in my other 85' GT 720hp on pump gas

Excuse for saying this, but try not to come off as an ass next time and I'd listen. And I'm actually use ported doves. I'm just trying to find a good gear to match what I'm going for. The reason I just say a BIG cam is because I don't know what I'm getting yet, is that a problem? Trust me, the last thing I am is hasty.

Sorry I won't be cool and build a 720hp 460 like you on my first time around.

I'm honestly not usually an ass like this but when I'm asking for a good gear ratio for a first time around BB Fox backed by a C4 it's not that hard especially when you are the wizard of big blocks or whatever. God damn.

Anyway, I already have Eibach front drag springs to compensate. I'm not an idiot.

I dont care if you listen or not, but you should listen to someone who's been there many moons ago. Why make the same mistakes, thats pretty foolish. Good luck. And you think drag springs are gonna cure your front end issues? :D

4.56!!!! rip the tires off!!!!

Actually i'd go with more like 3.90-4.10, with 4.30 absolute max if you're gonna street it. Choose a good gear and then you can kinda adjust that a little with tire height if you know what i mean.

About the gear choice, i say that because regaurdless of the engine size, when you've got a C4 and gears, you're gonna be limited in highway driving. I used to run a C4 with my 4.10s and the highways were rough. I could cruise at 70s but it was like 3200RPM to do it with a 26 inch tire. With a taller tire it wouldn't be quite as bad but still not that great.

ok, NOT street car... And what kind of springs are gonna take care of it??? Eibach drags are the tallest I've ever seen and a bitch to put in. I've got almost 5 inches between the tire and wheel well.

Your still making this too difficult...

3rd gear (1:1) at 5k with 28" tire needs a gear that can get it up to speed. Why don't you leave the motor, that is apparently gonna be a dog because 460s are impossible to make fast unless your name is SBFtech. Why isn't your name BBF tech?

Anyway, your an idiot and I'm goin 3.55

Umm....i would go with at least 4.10s then if it's drag only. Otherwise it'll likely bog off the line with slicks. Also with all that weight up front to transfer to the rear end, a good gear will give you lots of torque modification and help with the weight transfer.

And a 4.56 gear? Cool, blow the tires off but then by the 1/8th mile your topped... At 91mph @ 5k.

With 3.55 rear gear I could make it to 117mph @ 5k

1st 48mph
2nd 80mph
3rd 117mph

Hello, my name is sarcasm....aparently you let sbftech piss you off....shouldn't do that. The guy might know stuff but half the time he's too much of a prick to actually help.

I actually did have 4.56s with a C4 in an '83 with a 351W. It was mean as hell from stop light to stop light but pretty useless otherwise.

girls please change your panties. 85_ss is still mad from our cleveland cylinder head feud :rlaugh: Either guess or take advice from someone who has made the mistakes. Or better yet go ask 5spdGT he can tell you what you need even though hes never built one

No man you just bust a lot of balls....i don't know if you're old and just feel more wise than us young bloods or what, but you're pretty hard on people and it's often your way or no way at all. When i'm wrong i'm wrong, but when the person who's right is being a prick about it, then that's where the argument comes in. The worst thing is when someone actually has useful information but is too cocky to give it in a way that it'll help someone.

And i'm not busting YOUR balls on this one, i'm just stating why i said what i said because i don't think i'm the only one who's thinking it. You seem to know your stuff, i just think you could deliver it a little more people friendly.

:nice:

sometimes you gotta be a little rough, I see the same nonsense questions and answers here day in and day out. Almost all the time its the young kids who know all or pretend to know it all. I was young once too, but I am far from old at the same time. Its hard to read sarcasm or any type of emotion online, forget how it comes across, dont even read into it as you may be reading it wrong. Take the info from whomever if its factual and pertains to your situation and run with it. Who cares if the guy seems like a jag off, you gonna disregard what a smart jag off recommends all the while maybe, just maybe saving you time, grief, money, broken parts. Cmon be sensible

3:55 driver or 3:73 weekend track car and please don't put a single plane intake on an engine that wont see much over 5000 rpm's get a stealth or performer rpm ! use the torque and it will run great i know a big block car that ran high tens with a c-6 trans,7.5 rear and 342 gears 29" tall slick very mild 460 with dove heads ! you don't need much gear with 450-500 ft lbs of torque ! and a 400 horse bigblock will walk all over a 400 horse smallblock because every big block i have seen makes right around 450-500 ft lbs of torque all smallblocks make aroud what 300-350 !
