Engine Ping

I have a 2001 Bullitt. I have developed an engine ping under WOT @ 4000rpm, right at it's peak power band. Anyone else encountered this problem and what, if any, was the fix?

Thanx,

I thought my post addendum had been applied, my mistake. Anyway here is some more iportant info. I took the car to my dealer, (car dealer), they upgraded the PCM, checked the injectors and they gave it a clean bill of health.

I had installed a K&N cold air kit a while ago but that shouldn't cause an engine ping. Would it?!

These 2 valves are very sensitive to spark knock (detonation). Normally detonation is relatively quiet, but if you can audibly hear detonation, that is not a good thing. I wouldn't go WOT anymore until you find the cause of this "ping".

Given that, I have seen the addition of CAI's cause weird idle problems and sometimes detonation. You said they "upgraded" the PCM. Did they just replace the PCM or do you mean they re-tuned it? You may need to slighly adjust your tune to alleviate the detonation, if that's in fact what you are experiencing.

Do you feel any kind of a miss?

It seems to idle pretty smoothly. From a stand still it accelerates really well. It's just when it's under "load" that the problem occurs. The dealer said that they installed a software upgrade for the car. I think I need to find a Dyno shop and run some tests to see what's up. I just don't have the tools to do a proper diagnostic and I don't trust dealerships.

Yeah, long term owner here . You have a stick or automatic ? I have a stick, and in situations such as leaving a toll booth while still rolling , found that dropping down a gear or two put the engine back into its what I call (non-lugging mode) Drop it down a gear or two, you are not gonna blow anything up !

Have you tried cleaning the MAF? I'd try that first, then if that doesn't fix it, think about going back to the dealership and asking them why it suddenly went from not pinging to pinging after the software upgrade.

Most likely it's a bad batch of gas. Some 2v's will ping like crazy with 87 octane. Others will ping with 89 octane only. Just try different stations and octane rating's.

If that doesn't work, put the stock intake back on, and see if the ping goes away.

Thats what I was going to say. Ive heard countless people say the oil from a K&N can get on the MAF sensor wire and causing pinging.

My car tends to ping between shifts on hot days for some reason. Wierd.

Try it with the stock intake. Some of the cold air intakes will cause a lean condition, due to the way the air flowas through the maf sensor. Also over oiling the K&N will contaminate the maf sensor and make cleaning it necesssary. If the cold air intake is causing the problem, it won't be covered by warranty. So go back to stock before going back to the dealer.

it sounds like they already reprogramed the processor for TSB 01-12-3 so I would try it with the stock intake and then if it still don't go away try to reset the KAM ( keep alive memory) then watch the long and short term fuel trims at idle.. Open loop operation is altered by what is learned by the PCM in closed loop, if something is messing with the feedback from the 02 sensors or the MAF and IAT readings then you could possibly run into a lean WOT

If it goes away with the stock intake I would get a custom tune and then reinstall your intake.

I've changed the ACT sensor and I do have my eye on the MAF next. It makes sense. I've run serveral tanks of gas through it so I think that I can eliminate a fuel problem.
Since I took the car to the dealer and run a little, the ping "seems" to be diminishing a bit. I'll know for sure on my way home tonight and pull that hill. Also, I'm going to run another tank of fuel through it.
